Ladysmith Black Mambazo, a male choral group of South Africa, which was created by Joseph Shabalala, back in the 1960s, has been nominated for countless awards, and has also achieved several of them, such as the Grammy Awards, SAMA Awards, Drama Desk Awards, and the SARIE Awards. The group sings in sings in the vocal style of Isicathamiya and Mbube, thus, representing the traditional culture of South Africa for the millions of music aficionados worldwide. The music genres Isicathamiya and Mbube generated in the South African region, when the South African Zulu men left their families to travel to the major cities to find work, which was regularly in mines. These young men would then form choirs and perform Mbube music on Saturday nights to celebrate their last working day of the week (Sunday was the only off they used to get), in order to preserve s sense of community. Mbube is a powerful and a loud way of singing, but the group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, has changed the style into a softer way of singing, known as Isicathamiya, which means 'tip toe guys.'
Currently, there are nine group members in Ladysmith Black Mambazo, including Joseph Shabalala - the founder, the lead vocalist and musical director of the group, and his four sons: Thamsanqa Shabalala -will replace his father as the group's lead singer after his retirement, Sibongiseni Shabalala, Thulani Shabalala, and Msizi Shabalala; and his cousins including Albert Mazibuko, and Abednego Mazibuko; Joseph's friends: Russel Mthembu, and Mfanafuthi Dlamini. The group, for the first time recorded on the Gallo label in South Africa, during 1973. The name of their debut album was Amabutho. Ever since, Mambazo has recorded more than 50 albums till date. Many of these albums have been certified as gold- and/or platinum.
The group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, formed in 1964, and was recognized as an Isicathamiya group. The man behind its formation was Joseph Shabalala, who is currently the lead singer and the musical director of the group. Joseph had previously been singing together with the group members, since the early 1950s. Later, to fulfill his dreams that involved isicathamiya melodes, Joseph formed his own choir with these men. The young group used to perform at various local wedding ceremonies, and after gaining much of the success from there, Joseph Shabalala entered his group into Isicathamiya competitions. After the release of their first album in 1973, the group was forbidden to compete in these competitions as they had won many of them. Even the name of the group - Ladysmith Black Mambazo, came about as a result of winning every singing competition in which the group had entered.
The name can be broken down, in order to better understand how it came about: Ladysmith is the homeland of the Shabalala family; whereas, Black is in reference to black oxen, which is thought as the strongest animal on the farm. Mambazo is a Zulu word, and refers to an ax, which symbolizes the group's ability to 'chop down' the competition.
However, they were still welcomed by the masses to perform for them for entertainment. Thus, the group started performing in shows that were specially made for their own audiences, which soon lead to the group's touring around South Africa in their own concerts. Ladysmith Black Mambazo, at first, because of the Apartheid system in use, faced some problems with the police guards for performing in these tours, but they almost immediately they were allowed to tour without permits.
The Mambazo's gained worldwide prominence in 1986, on working together with Paul Simon on his album - Graceland, which paved their way for international releases and making the group widely known on an international level. Since then, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has been nominated for a plethora of awards, and has also been awarded with many of these.
Today, the group tours heavily all around the world, touring for eight months, on an annual basis. Currently, the group is preparing for their U.K tour, and the tickets for it have been gone out on sale. It is time for all the Mambazo fans to book their Ladysmith Black Mambazo Tickets right away; otherwise they might miss on them!
