Born in 1933, English blues singer, organist, guitarist and songwriter John Mayall has a musical career that spans over more fifty years. His band John Mayall and the Bluesbreaker included some of most famous blues and blues rock musicians. Coming from a family that was a music enthusiast, John was inspired to sounds of American blues such as Albert Ammons, Eddie Lang and Lead Belly. Growing up, he taught himself how to play piano, guitars and harmonica.
John started playing with local musicians and semi-professional bands at an early age. After graduating from Manchester College of Art, he dedicated himself to a full time musical career. In 1962, Mayall became a member of Blues Syndicate formed by alto saxophonist Jack Massarik and trumpeter John Rowlands. The band became a frequent and popular band at all night R&B sessions at Twisted Wheel cellar club in Manchester. The band was renamed as Bluebreakers in later 1963. With Eric Captain as the new guitarist in 1965, the Bluebreakers began attracting considerable attention. A couple of tracks including I'm Your Witchdoctor and Telephone Blues gained popularity among listeners.
The band released their first LP in 1965 named John Mayall Plays John Mayall. Their second LP Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton released in 1966 was their first commercial breakthrough rising to the number 6 on British charts. Its audacious aggressiveness and molten fluidity of Clapton's guitar playing touched many people.
Over the years, the band saw many line-up changes with the release of A Hard Rock, The Crusade and the Blues Alone in 1967 which rose to number 10, number 8 and number 24 respectively on UK charts. Bare Wires released in 1968 peaked at number 3. In 1970, Mayall launched a recording project with many notable musicians who played for the band during previous years. The album released consequently, titled as Back to the Roots featured Clapton, Mandel and Mick Taylor on guitar, Thompson and Larry Taylor on bass, Hartley on drums and Almond on woodwinds.
Mayall relocated to USA in 1970 and spent next fifteen years there recording with local musicians and various labels. In 1971, he went on a tour for a few months with studio musicians. He also produced a jazz oriented session and released a live album Jazz Blues Fusion following year.
Throughout the eighties and nineties, John's popularity went from strength to strength with a succession of dynamic albums like Behind the Iron Curtain, Chicago Line, A Sense of Place and Grammy nominated Wake Up Call. 1982 brought the reunion of Mick Taylor, Collin Allen and John McVie and what followed was a two-year world tour. The tour was extremely successful and live recordings sold several million copies worldwide. On the 40th year of his career, Mayall released a celebratory album credited to Mayall and friends with twenty names on the cover including new and old members of Bluesbreakers. In 2008, Mayall disbanded Bluebreakers to cut back on his workload and announced a solo world tour.
In 2005, Mayall was awarded an OBE, the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. After fifty years of producing exceptionally outstanding music and winning millions of hearts worldwide, John Mayall continues to tour with a backing band that includes bassist Greg Rzab, drummer Jay Daven port and guitarist Rocky Athas.
