Hootie The Blowfish
Hootie & the Blowfish's - formed at the University of South Carolina, the group features vocalist/guitarist Darius Rucker, Mark Bryan, Dean Felber, and Jim Soni Sonefeld. The group's first album, Cracked Rear View, was released in the fall of 1994 and a single, Hold My Hand, became a major success, resulting in the album to become no#1, as well as launching a second hit, Let Her Cry, which was quickly followed by Only Wanna Be With You.
The band's name comes from two of frontman Darius Rucker's college choir friends, neither of whom was ever a band member. One, with a round face and glasses, was nicknamed Hootie because of his perceived owl-like appearance. The Blowfish also got his nickname from his facial appearance, in his case chubby cheeks.
Cracked Rear View had become a massive success by the fall of 1995, going platinum several times over and had sold 13 million copies in the U.S. alone. Their second album Fairweather Johnson initially didn't replicate that success. It entered the charts at number one and sold two million copies within its first four months of release, but it didn't produce any hit singles on the level of the debut's Hold My Hand or Let Her Cry. The album Musical Chairs was released in 1998. The album Scattered, Smothered, and Covered was launched after two years, featuring previously unreleased material and Hootie's own tributes to R.E.M. and the Smiths. The band released new studio material on a 2003 self-titled effort for Atlantic, and pursued by an engaging Best of set in 2004, including all their hit numbers, also cover songs like 4-40's I Go Blind.
Hootie & the Blowfish toured for most of the year in support of the hits collection, and then returned to the studio and soon released Looking for Lucky in August 2005 through their own Sneaky Long imprint. Lucky featured contributions from numerous guests, including Matraca Berg and members of the Silos.Miami Dolphins' legendary Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino appeared in the band's video for the song Only Wanna Be With You, along with several other athletes.
The album Scattered, Smothered and Covered is named in tribute of Waffle House, a popular Southern chain of all-night diners. Specifically, the title refers to an order of hash browns covered with diced onions and melted cheese. The minor league baseball team in Columbia, South Carolina was named the Blowfish in tribute to the band. The band's EP Kootchypop was named after a reference to female genitalia in a stand-up comedy act by What's Happening co-star Shirley Hemphill
The characters on Friends were fans of Hootie & the Blowfish; in Season 2 Episode 5 (The One With The Five Steaks And An Eggplant) they attended one of their concerts, Monica received a hickey from a blowfish.Hootie & The Blowfish brought their entire band and crew down to New Orleans for 5 days of building houses in Musicians' Village, on October 16-20, 2006.
Hootie & the Blowfish appeared on MTV Unplugged on the eve of the release of their second album, 1996's Fairweather Johnson. Though sales began promisingly, the album quickly ran out of steam, having sold four million copies in the U.S. Hootie & the Blowfish has since released four more studio albums, Musical Chairs; Scattered, Smothered and Covered; Hootie & the Blowfish; and Looking for Lucky.
The band currently has an extensive touring schedule and does an annual New Year's Eve show at the Silverton Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
