George Winston is an American musician best known as a pianist. He plays contemporary instrumental music and also plays other instruments aside from the piano including the solo harmonica and the solo acoustic guitar. He has been active in the music industry since 1972 and has been signed onto record labels such as Dancing Cat Records, Takoma Records and Windham Hill Records. He originates from the state of
George Winston studied at the
George Winston developed a fondness for contemporary instrumental at a very young age. It all happened when he saw A Charlie Brown Christmas in 1965 and then went to buy the soundtrack of this Peanuts special. From then on, he would wait for each Peanuts special just so as to listen to the latest music by Guaraldi. In fact, he paid tribute to the artist when he released the album Linus and Lucy - The Music of Vince Guaraldi which was based on the artist's music for the Peanuts cartoons. In 2002, he released the album Night Divides the Day - The Music of The Doors which was music by the famous sixties band, The Doors, turned into marvelous piano solos. The name of the album itself is based upon one of the many successful albums by The Doors.
He has been reviewed and praised in the media a lot. The Boston Globes reviews George Winston's performances as 'mood setting and tranquilizing' with such performances engaging the audience, each of whom have come to see him live with George Winston tickets in hand. He has appeared on many shows including the WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour and it was at this show that he described his guitar playing method which was inspired by blues guitar players. Although he is renowned today as a pianist, he first began playing the organ in 1971 after listening to music by The Doors. He then began playing the piano in 1971 after hearing some of the great pianists who were famous in the twenties and thirties. His style of playing the piano is often dubbed as folk piano and he has recently begun playing a new New Orleans R&B piano style influenced by the music of James Booker and Professor Longhair.
To date, George Winston has released fifteen albums out which several are platinum certified. His first album is 1972's Ballads and Blues and his latest album is Love Will Come - The Music of Vince Guaraldi, Volume 2 released in 2010. He has also been behind five soundtracks with the first being The Velveteen Rabbit in 1984 and the latest being 2003's Bread Comes to Life; to hear wonderful contemporary instrumental music live from an artist who has sold millions, all one needs are George Winston tickets and that's it.
