George Clinton
Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and pioneer of P-Funk genre, George Clinton was born on July 22, 1941 in Kannapolis, North Carolina. Clinton earned his fame as a solo funk artist in 1981, but prior to that he was considered the mastermind behind the bands Funkadelic and the Parliament.
Clinton is known for his innovative style of music and for this inventiveness in his music he is also cited the most important innovator of the funk music.
Clinton grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey and as of now he lives in Tallahassee; however he was born in Kannapolis, North Carolina.
While growing up in Plainfield, Clinton earned his living by straightening the hair at his barber salon, and during that time he took his inspiration from Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, and formed up a doo wop group called The Parliaments.
Initially Parliaments failed to be a commercial success, but later their efforts finally paid off when the group made music under the names Parliament and Funkadelic. The group experimented different sound elements from the music of musicians such as Sly and the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown and Cream.
In early 1980s Clinton recorded several albums with a major collaboration from P-Funks musicians; however they were released as Clintons solo albums. Clinton did so due to complex copyright and trademark issues regarding the name of the group.
As a solo artist and the P-Funk All-Stars, Clinton signed his first record deal with Capitol Records in 1982. The same year Clinton released his first solo album with Capitol Records, titled Computer Games that was led by his hit single Loopzilla.
Loopzilla debuted in the Top 20 R&B Charts, while his following single from Computer Games, Atomic Dog peaked at the #1 spot on R&B Chart. His following three albums, You Shouldn't-Nuf Bit Fish, Some of My Best Jokes Are Friends and R&B Skeletons in the Closet, were released during the next four years after the released of Computer Games.
Apart from these studio albums, Clinton also released one of his live albums, Mothership Connection (Live from Summit, Houston, Texas). During that period, Clinton also released three hit singles that were Nubian Nut, Last Dance, and Do Fries Go with That Shake.
Clinton also collaborated with Red Hot Chili Peppers on their album Freaky Styley in 1985. Chili Peppers selected Clinton to produce their album because the band itself was a huge fan of Clintons music and the Funk music in general.
At the time when the album was released, it did not earned much commercial success due to the lack of bands exposure and fame back then, but since then as their fame rose, album has been able to sell more than 500,000 units world wide.
Although Clintons fame as a musician started to fade in 1980s, as he was faced with several copyright and legal issues that led to financial problems, but his career underwent a recovery process as many of that times rappers and musicians started sampling his songs, and were highly influenced by his music.
