The Akademie Fur Alte Musik Berlin is a spectacular chamber orchestra located in East Berlin, Germany. Its name in English is Academy for Ancient Music Berlin and is also known as Akamus. It is a chamber orchestra that has been active since 1982 and performs more than one hundred concerts each year for those with Akademie Fur Alte Musik Berlin tickets in hand. It performs small chamber works to larger, more epic symphonic pieces at many famous musical venues in Europe. It also regularly tours the US, Canada, Asia and parts of South America.
The Akademie Fur Alte Musik Berlin is home to thirty sensational musicians, who make up the core of this orchestra of sorts. It is led by four concertmasters, namely Georg Jallweit, Stephan Mai, Midori Seiler and Bernhard Forck. The orchestra often plays host to guest conductors, with the likes of René Jacobs, Daniel Reuss, Creed Marcus, Hans-Christoph Rademann and Peter Dijkstra having performed with them. In 1994, the orchestra began recording music, exclusively recording for French record label, Harmonia Mundi. Its records have gone on to win many awards including the Cannes Classical Award, the Diapason d'Or, the Grammy Award, the Edison Award and the Gramophone Award.
One of its recordings, Magic Flute, won the highly coveted German Record Critics' Award. Since 1984, it has performed in a number of concerts in Berlin. It has also performed at the Philharmonie Berlin, Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden, De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music and the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City. It has also collaborated with groups such as RIAS Kammerchor and played with a number of famous soloists, including Bejun Mehta, Andreas Scholl, Cecilia Bartoli and Sandrine Piau.
Signs of its innovative spirit as a modern day orchestra playing ancient music, it has worked with dance companies such as Sasha Waltz & Guests in unique productions, Medea and Dido & Aeneas, featuring music by Pascal Dusapin and Henry Purcell respectively. It has won many an award including a Grammy Award, the International Classical Music Award in 2011, the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, the Choc du Monde de la Musique seven times, the Choc de Classica twice, the Diapason d'Or six times, the Edison Classical Music Award twice, the Gramophone Award twice, the Midem Classical Award and the Georg-Philipp-Telemann-Preis der Landeshauptstadt Magdeburg.
