Majestic Theatre San Antonio
The San Antonio"s oldest and largest atmospheric theatre, Majestic Theater is recognized as one of the most ornate facilities in the United States.
The Majestic Theater is located in the heart of downtown San Antonio, and was listed on the National Register of Historical Places.
This National Historic Landmark has long held a special place in the archives of Texas theatrical and architectural history. It was designed by architect John Eberson for Karl Hoblitzelle"s Interstate Theatres in 1929.
Today, with the capacity of over 4000 seats, the Majestic Theater is the home of the San Antonio Symphony and Broadway across America San Antonio.
The Majestic Theater remains one of the finest atmospheric theatres ever built. Intended to be the most modern and ornate building in South Texas, it stood proudly for years as the largest theatre in Texas and the second largest motion picture theatre in the country.
It was also completed with new sound and projection equipment and was the first theatre in the state to be totally air-conditioned. The year 1975 saw the Majestic Theater marking its way to the National Register of Historical Places.
For the next decade, the facility entertained South Texans by hosting a wide variety of concerts, performing arts events, and touring Broadway productions.
In 1995, with the acquisition of the Little Brady Building, a 3.5 million dollar expansion of the Majestic stage house was undertaken which was completed in the fall of 1996.
The new theater included a new 40 feet-deep stage, a state-of-the-art orchestra shell, modernized theatrical rigging, expanded dressing room facilities, and enlarged storage space.
Today, the Majestic Theatre hosts over 175 performances each year and thus contributing heavily to strengthen the City"s economy.
To-dated, musical sensations such as Miss Saigon, Les Miserables, Cats, Cabaret, and Ragtime have graced the Majestic stage, as well as such international classic artists as Itzhak Pearlman and Isaac Stern.
