Ken Ludwig has created spectacular productions over the years, such as 'Lend Me A Tenor' and 'Sullivan and Gilbert'. Ken Ludwig specializes in farces and irrespective of the cast he takes for his productions, the element of surprise, unpredictability and hilarity remains intact in his works.
In the same vein, he brings another play to the stage. The story is a based on William Gillette's memorable portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in a 1916 silent film and on stage. Gillette is responsible for creating the image that is associated with the renowned detective today. The sub-heading, 'Holmes for the Holidays', written under the main title 'The Game's Afoot' signifies the direction of the play.
The production of “The Game's Afoot,” is set in the thirties with William Gillette as the protagonist. The play starts off by showing Gillette playing Sherlock Holmes in a stage production. When the cast is taking their bows at the end of the show, a gunshot is heard and Gillette is wounded. Two weeks later, Gillette is recuperating in his Connecticut Castle. It is Christmas season and he is soon joined by his other fellow cast members for a weekend of festivities. He is also accompanied by his mother, a controversial columnist and an odd police detective.
As the evening progresses, unforeseen mayhem ensues and one of the guests winds up dead. As it turns out, there have been a series of mysterious deaths and Gillette suspects that the killer is one of the guests. He dons Sherlock Holmes' persona to track down the killer before another of the guests drops dead. The danger of this endeavor is coupled with hilarity as surprises lurk at every turn of the story.
The upcoming play will be staged at the Drury Lane Theater. The unique and versatile facility will play host to an extraordinary cast of actors that will keep you absorbed throughout the performance.
