It is speculated that the concept of Peter Pan was inspired from Barrie's elder brother David, who died in a skating accident at 13. His mother severely affected by this. Andrew Birkin, the author of J.M. Barrie and the Lost Boys, says the death was a catastrophe beyond belief, and one from which she never fully recovered… If Margaret Ogilvy [Barrie's mother as the heroine of his 1896 novel of that title] drew a measure of comfort from the notion that David, in dying a boy, would remain a boy for ever, Barrie drew inspiration.
Adaptations of Peter Pan:
There have been many adaptations of Peter Pan for stage and screen. Peter Pan is mostly played by an adult female. This follows the original that had a female playing the part. It can be noted that in those days, adults had to play children's roles in plays, as there were laws against children performing in the evenings.
In 1924, Paramount Pictures produced a first film version of Peter Pan. This was a silent movie that starred Betty Bronson as Peter, and Ernest Torrence as Captain Hook.
