New York City Opera, commonly abbreviated as NYCO was formed in the year 1943. It was opened with the sole aim of giving opera lovers a place where they can enjoy some of the best performances. At the time of inauguration, New York City Mayor of that time namely Fiorello La Guardia termed New York City Opera as "the people's opera." The opera's first home was the New York City Center that was located on West 55th Street. In the mid 60's NYCO moved to the world renowned Lincoln Center for Performing Arts that is located in the heart of Manhattan in New York City. In 2011 the New York City Opera Company had to relocate to another location in Lowe Manhattan on 75 Broad St.
Acclaimed pianist and conductor Laszlo Halasz was appointed the first director of the company. The first season of New York City Opera was in 1944 and it kicked off with the works of masters like Giacomo Puccini, George Bizet's and Friedrich von Flotow's. NYCO during this year revived world renowned operas of these composers such as Tosca, Carmen and Martha. Halasz managed to bring in some of the best opera singers of that time such as Martha Lipton, Jennie Tourel, Debria Brown, Eva Likova, Ramon Vinay, Thomas Hayward, Dorothy Kirsten and Francis Bible. In 1945 New York City Opera made history by having the first African American singer Todd Duncan portraying the character of Tonio in the opera Pagliacci composed by Italian musician Ruggero Donato Leoncavallo. In the following years a number of well known African American opera singers performed at NYCO. In 1951 Camilla Williams and Lawrence Winters teamed up as a couple to sing title roles in Porgy and Bess a masterpiece by American composer and pianist George Gershwin.
From 1952 onwards NYCO had a number of gifted opera directors such as Joseph Rosenstock, Eric Leinsdorf, Julius Rudel, Beverly Sills, Christopher Keene and Paul Kellogg. Rudel's period as the director of New York City Opera is longest as he worked in this position for over twenty years. A number of world premiers of a number of famous works by different composers have taken place here such as The Tender Land by Aaron Copland, Trouble Island by William Grant Still, Six Characters in Search of an Author by Hugo Weisgall, The Wings of the Dove by Douglas Moore, The Passion of Jonathan Wade by Carlisle Floyd, The Student from Salmanca by Jan Bach, Tale for a Deaf Ear by Mark Bucci, Candide by Leonard Bernstein and The Servant of Two Masters by Vittorio Giannini.
