Headquartered at Lucent Danstheater in The Hague, Nederlands Dans Theater is a Dutch Contemporary Dance Company. It was founded by Carel Birnie, Aart Verstegen and Benjamin Harkarvy alongwith 18 members in 1959. Under the strong guidance and unparalleled leadership of artistic directors like Hans van Manen and Jirí Kylián, the company quickly gained fame and worldwide recognition. Appointed as of January 2012, Paul Lightfoot is the current artistic director.
Nederlands Dans Theater breaks away from the more traditionally oriented Dutch ballet and focuses on experimenting with new techniques and forms of dance. In 1960s, the repertoire of the theater was mostly influenced American modern dance. Besides Lucent Danstheater, Nederlands Dans Theater also performs at other venues including Nijmegen's Stadsschouwburg and Amsterdam's Het Muziektheater. Three companies work under Nederlands Dans Theater. Nederlands Dans Theater I was founded in 1959 and is internationally acclaimed. Besides local work, it presents large number of works by well-renowned international choreographers like Mats Ek, Nacho Duato, Ohad Naharin and William Forsythe. Nederlands Dans Theater II was founded in 1978 for dancers between 17 and 22. It promotes work by younger choreographers striving to make room for new and brave initiatives and marking teh new generation of dancers. Nederlands Dans Theater III was set up in 1991 for dancers of 40 years or old. The group became legendary in the dancing world but was discontinued in 2006.
Nederlands Dans Theatre holds a firm reputation in international field of dance. The theater has a loyal audiences in New York, London, Madrid, Singapore and several other parts of the world.
