Movin Out
Movin' Out is a name of a jukebox musical, which is featuring the songs of Billy Joel. The idea was conceptualized by Twyla Tharp. The musical tells in a very novel way about the lives of a generation of American youth, grown up in the 1960s on Long Island, and their experiences with the Vietnam War.
The major characters are taken from the names appearing in various Joel tunes like high school sweethearts Brenda and Eddie, James, Judy, and Tony. The show has a very unique feel unlike the traditional musical.
It also carries a definite series of dances linked by a thin plot, and interestingly the dancers do not say a word in the whole item.
The vocal factors are performed by a pianist and band suspended on a platform above the stage, it is the time, when the dancers act out the narrative having no dialogue, only the show of expression on faces and their body language during a rock ballet sort of dance.
The show has been a production of the Broadway production, which is directed and choreographed by Tharp. The show was opened on October 24, 2002 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre after the twenty eight previews; there it had run for 1303 performances.
The cast of the show included Michael Cavanaugh, Wade Preston, Elizabeth Parkinson, James Fox, and several other prominent names. It is worth mentioning here that the first National Tour of Movin' Out ran for three years.
It had opened on January 27, 2004 and ended on January 21, 2007 after 1,111 performances. The tour had won a great admiration and generally got excellent reviews and full houses in 82 U.S. cities, and also had a stint in Canada in December 2005.
Darren Holden was the primary Piano Man for the entire run of the Tour; he was joined by Matt Wilson, James Fox and Matthew Friedman, during different time intervals.
The show was opened by the West End production on April 10, 2006, at London's Apollo Victoria Theatre. The show had received quite fabulous reviews, but it had run for less than two months. The lead characters were played by James Fox and Darren Reeves.
There was a drawback that the Victoria Station, was quite far away from the city's hub of theatre activity, it was also not fit for the capacity of the show.
There was a lapse in the marketing strategy as it was highlighted as a traditional musical rather than the dance production it is, and Joel had not had any major hits in the UK for several years, so he wasn't a major draw for mainstream audiences.
The show played Tokyo in Japan in the summer of 2006, with many of the first national tours performers, Darren Holden and Matthew Friedman in the lead role.
Then the second National Tour opened in Atlantic City on June 14, 2007 with Matthew Friedman and Kyle Martin in the lead role of Piano man, and it was a huge success like the first one.
