Idea of this play is conceived by the Back to Back Theatre of Australia with its ensemble featuring actors with varying forms of mental disabilities. Ganesh Versus the Third Reich is a double narrative with arresting visuals and theatrical moments that are simply surreal. The play has an adult theme and contains abrasive language. Moreover, the story is fictitious and does not represent historical facts. Director Bruce Gladwin has done justice to the screenplay and proved himself to be a genius turning it into an extraordinary play.
The double narrative quality entails that it has two stories going on simultaneously; it tells the story of Ganesh and his quest of Swastika in Nazi Germany while at the same time it also features the story of a young guy who has an inspiration to create a play about the Lord Ganesh, the Hindu god known for overcoming obstacles ? hence a play within a play. There are also a group of individuals working with this young man on his creation. All the performers act as themselves and also as actors and characters of the play with the aim to show audience that they are seeing a play being made in front of their eyes, right at the moment. As a rehearsal starts for the ?Ganesh play?, the story gets a bit complicated where audience are asked to employ their senses to understand what the real story is and who?s playing what ? making it a show where the viewers are hooked on right from the start until the last moment.
Ganesh Versus the Third Reich is an excellent attempt by Back to Back Theatre in presenting the real world issues with a rather discrete foreign focus. With this play, the production company has established a unique position for itself in the international theatre community. This is a play which speaks to all the people in the world because of a new form of contemporary theatre and an intense work of imagination. Of course a play as incredibly abstract as Ganesh Versus the Third Reich can?t escape controversy because of its dark subtext of focusing Nazi Germany and the systemic killing of people with disabilities and also because the play raises questions about the cultural appropriation in featuring a major figure from the Hindu deity. But anyone who has happened to watch it agrees that this is one of the most versatile productions they have ever seen.
Ganesh Versus the Third Reich has won numerous awards and prizes including Ken Denton Fellowship in 2009; Melbourne Festival Age Critics Award in 2011; Green Room Awards in the categories of Best Ensemble Performance, Best Direction and Best Production in 2012 and; Helpmann Award in the category of Best Play in the same year.
Funders for developing the project of Ganesh Versus the Third Reich and its sponsors include Australia Council for Arts, Melbourne Festival, Sidney Myer Fund and the National Theatre Studio. Cheap Ganesh Versus the Third Reich tickets are a must buy for all kinds of theater lovers as tickets to this play means that you are in for a show that is disarming, beautiful and poignant at the same time.
