Dream girls is about three women from Chicago (Illinois); Deena (beyonce), Effie (Jennifer Hudson) and lorrell (anika noni), who team up to form a talented girl group called the Dreamettes. Discovered by an ambitious named Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Fox) at a talent contest, he offers them a great opportunity to work with James (Thunder Early) as back-ups. With Curtis around, the girls gain popularity and soon became famous the dreams. However, gradually the spotlight tends to narrow in on deena only, ultimately, pushing back the less beautiful Effie. Though, the dreams become phenomenal but soon, they realize all that glitters is not gold, after all.
Dream girls is a Broadway musical which opened on December 20, 1981 at the imperial theatre comprising largely of an African-American cast. It won six Tony awards in 1982. Unfortunately, after 1522 performances, it closed down on August 11, 1985.
It features music by Henry Krieger and lyrics and book by Tom Eyen. The original Broadway production was directed by Michael Bennett, produced by Bennett, Bob Avian, Geffen Records, and The Shubert Organization, and choreographed by Bennett and Michael Peters. The original Broadway production ( which won six Tony Awards ) starred Jennifer Holliday, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine, Ben Harney, Cleavant Derricks, Obba Babatunde, and Vondie Curtis-Hall.
The musical was adapted into a motion picture by Dream Works and Paramount Picture, and opened on 15and 25 December, 2006. The film version stars Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé Knowles, Anika Noni Rose, Jamie Fox, Eddie Murphy, Keith Robinson, and Danny Glover.
How the idea of dreams girls was conceived in the first place if quite interesting! It started off as a project for Nell Carter. Dramatist Eyen and composer Henry Krieger first worked together on the Eyen's play The Dirtiest Show in Town, also a musical in1975. Carter appeared in the musical, and her performance motivated Eyen and Krieger to create a musical about Black back-up singers, under the working title of Project #9. Project #9 was work shopped for Joe Papp; Carter was joined by Sheryl Lee Ralph and Loretta Devine, who were to play her group-mates. The project abandoned after Carter departed to appear in the soap opera Ryan's Hope in 1978. But shortly, project#9 was brought back in function by successful Broadway director/producer/choreographer Michael Bennett, joined by Ralph and Devine and Eyen.
The cast this time included Ben Harney, Obba Babatunde, Cleavant Derricks, and twenty-year-old gospel singer Jennifer Holliday in place of Carter. However, Holliday left the project as she disapproved of the material and her role, Effie White, died at the end of the first act. Eyen, Bennett, and Krieger continued working on story-line and songs. Cheryl Gaines and Phyllis Hyman were both considered as replacements.
After two workshops which included actress Jenifer Lewis as Effie, Holliday returned to the project, now known as Dreamgirls. However, she found that Effie?s role had been reduced extensively in favor of Sheryl Lee Ralph's Deena character, and Holliday eventually quit the project again. After obtaining enough funds from music industry tycoon David Geffen and fellow co-financiers ABC Entertainment, Metromedia, and the Shubert family, Bennett called Holliday back and agreed to write the play's second act in a new manner and build up her character.
