Originally consisted of only 233 members with the honor of being the first trade organization formed to promote a music genre, the Country Music Association Awards(CMA) was founded in 1958 in Nashville, Tennessee. The objectives of the organization are to guide and enhance the development of Country Music throughout the world; to demonstrate it as a viable medium to advertisers, consumers and media; and to provide a unity of purpose for the Country Music industry.

Initially, CMA's Board of Directors included nine directors and five officers. Wesley Rose, president of Acuff-Rose Publishing, Inc., served as CMA's first chairman of the board. Broadcasting entrepreneur and executive Connie B. Gay was the founding president.

Originally with nine individual membership categories, the current 15 categories represent all facets of the music industry. Organizational memberships are also available although CMA membership is composed of those persons or organizations that are involved in Country Music, directly and substantially.

CMA Awards are voted on by business members of the Country Music Association. The first CMA Awards ceremony was held in 1967 in Nashville. Sonny James and Bobbie Gentry hosted the event, which was not televised. The winner of the first "Entertainer of the Year" award was singer Eddy Arnold. "Male Vocalist of the Year" went to Jack Greene and "Female Vocalist of the Year" to Loretta Lynn. In 1968, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans hosted the awards, which were presented at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

This time the ceremony was filmed and televised on NBC a few weeks later. Beginning in 1969, the awards were televised live, usually during October or November of each year. They continued to be broadcasted on NBC until switching to CBS in 1972, where they remained until 2005. Starting in November 2006, the Annual CMA Awards are televised on ABC.

Whenever the CMA Awards are mentioned, it elicits the question, "How are the winners chosen?" The answer to that query does much to explain why the CMA Awards are so highly regarded and coveted by the recipients. The CMA Awards voting process is a three-part process involving more than 5,000 professional members. Annual awards are given in the following twelve categories: Entertainer, Male Vocalist, Female Vocalist, Horizon Award, Vocal Group, Vocal Duo, Single, Album, Song, Music Event, Music Video, and Musician.

Thus, award winners are honored by their peers in the music industry. The staff of the CMA does not participate in the voting process. The awards criteria, rules of election and balloting procedures are established by CMA's Board of Directors. The eligibility period for the 2006 CMA Awards spans from July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007. Singles, albums, music videos, and qualifying products for the vocal event must have been first released during the eligibility period. The election is conducted in three rounds as follows:

? Each CMA member may nominate one act in each category on the first ballot. Any eligible act, record or song receiving 10 or more eligible nominations on the first ballot will become an official nominee and will then be submitted to the entire CMA membership on the second ballot.

? On the second, ballot CMA members must vote for five nominees in each category. The results are tabulated, and the five receiving the most votes in each category are listed as finalists on the third ballot.

? On the final ballot, members vote for one in each category to determine the winners.

The entire balloting process is conducted and certified by the international accounting firm Deloitte & Touche LLP.
