A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder is lauded as "daring, naughty and ingeniously absurd!" by the Variety magazine. It has become a hit musical sensation ever since it had its world premiere at the Hartford Stage in 2012. The book for the musical is penned down by the dramatist and screenwriter Robert L. Freedman. He based it on the British writer Roy Horniman's novel Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal which was published in 1907.
Freedman collaborated with Steven Lutvak on writing down the lyrics for the musical. Lutvak also provides the music while Peggy Hickey handles the choreography for the show. This stage adaptation of Horniman's novel is directed by Darko Tresnjak. The musical is now on a tour being shown across the US where it will open at major theatres. The story of the musical follows the hilarious story of an ambitious commoner Monty Navarro. On her mother's death, a mysterious old lady pays Monty a visit. She claims that Monty's mother was the daughter of the moneyed aristocratic D'Ysquith family. She also informs him that he will someday inherit the family fortune since he is ninth in line of succession for the Earldom of Highhurst. Being poor most of his life and being rejected by his love interest Sibella for lack of finances, Monty decides to pursue his right to earldom. The only obstacle that remains between him and a life of worth and money are eight troublesome relatives he has never met before. What further ensues in his pursuit is an uproarious tale that is full of quips and thrills.
This beautifully crafted musical is a work of theatre giants, superstar actors and brilliant backstage team. The bookwriter Robert L. Freedman is a recipient of the Fred Ebb and Kleban Awards and an Emmy Awards and Writers Guild nominee. The composer and lyricist of the musical Steven Lutvak is praised for The Wayside Inn, Esmeralda and his performances at the Carnegie Hall. In just half a decade, A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder has won numerous awards and accolades. At the Tony Awards, it nabbed four wins out of the ten nominations it received. It also won seven Drama Desk Awards from a total of twelve nominations. It was nominated in eleven categories at the Outer Critics Circle Awards from which it grabbed four wins. At all three of these occasions, it was named the best and outstanding musical for the year 2014. From the two Drama League Award nominations, it won 'Distinguished Production of a Musical'. The recorded musical album also brought in a nomination at the 2015 Grammy Awards. A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder is a coproduction of the Hartford Stage in Hartford, Connecticut and the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, California. So after the musical first premiered in Hartford, it went on to open at the Old Globe Theatre. At both theatres, it won widespread critical acclaim for its successful production runs that led to its debut on Broadway in 2013.
