Werder Bremen played their very first game in September of 1899. They won 1-0 against ASC 1898 Bremen. On the inauguration of German Football Association, the team was represented in Leipzig. The early period of Bremen career is full of successes as they won various championships on the local level. However, when they applied for playoffs for national championship, they could not make it through. Bremen was the first club ever to put up a fee for the fans to come and attend their matches, a trend that was soon followed by various other clubs.
Werder Bremen hired services of a professional coach during early 20’s, the first ever German club to do so. During 1933, German football was innovated and many changes took place under Third Reich. After that, Bremens scored some of their finest wins; they captured division titles during 34, 36 and 37. That was the time when they appeared in national championship playoffs for the very first time as well. During the war, 1944 – 1945 seasons were cut down and German football experienced a long pause, during which the club managed to remain active on the local level, since the players weren’t allowed to take on any other job.
After the war, Werder Bremen continued to do a good job and came to be known as one of the top North German teams. They also won 1961’s German Cup and League Championship. However draught hit the team 1965 onwards, as their performance started tumbling down. 1980’s onward the team found foot on the ground once again after the hiring of Otto Rehhagel, the new coach. Rehhagel led the team into a spree of wins as they managed to take over 83, 85, 86 and 88 championships. This wasn’t the end; in 1992 they also won “European Cup Winners’ Cup.”
They managed to continue their good position throughout the decade. In 2006 – 2007 seasons, they managed to win Winter Championship title. 2008 – 2009 seasons brought them UEFA-Cup and they became popular by the name of “Italian Killers.” Currently, the club holds rivalry against Humburger SV, another German team. Recently a new rivalry has formed between Bremen and Schalke 04 too.
