Oakland Athletics
The Oakland Athletics is a Major League Baseball team based in California. It plays in the Western Division of the American League. The team is very popular with its nick name 'A's'. The Athletics' name dates back to 1860 when an amateur team, the Athletic (Club) of Philadelphia, was formed.
The franchise began in the early nineteenth century as American League Franchise. In the beginning of the century, president of the league Bancroft Johnson renamed the Western League as the American League. They aimed at being the second largest league of the American Baseball.
This was the beginning of a new century and Johnson enhanced the East side while offloading a few franchises from the western part. Philadelphia was a freshly created franchise brought in place to give Philadelphia Phillies of National League a tough time. The recruitment of Connie Mack, the ex-catcher was made to manage the club. Once hired he made useful contribution to the team by creating Philadelphia Athletes which had Ben Shibe's as well as his own concern in it.
The Oakland Athletics was successful in establishing themselves as one of the leading teams of the League right from the start. The A's were six time winners of American League Pennant in the first decade of the century. They also made exceptional performance in the World Series by winning the title thrice in ten years. The exceptional Infield featured Eddie Collins, John Stuffy McInnis, Frank Home Run Baker and Jack Barry. The pitchers Charles Chief Bender and Eddie Plank offered good support.
They saw their concrete and steel ballpark for the first time as majors' in 1909 and it was known as Shibe Park. Later, Mack became an equal partner with Shibe after buying another 25 percent of the team's stock. While retaining the charge of the business side, Mack was given the Baseball's control by Shibe. After that, Mack began to build another winner. In 1927 and 1928, the Athletics finished second to the New York Yankees. They were the victorious of pennants in 1929, 1930 and 1931. They also won the World Series in 1929 and 1930. The A's won over 100 games in each of the three years.
Just as the team was started getting a grip consequent to their arrival in Oakland, they were shifted into Oakland-Alameda Coliseum. The 1968 game against the Minnesota Twins, Catfish Hunter was successful in pitching the first perfect game in the American League since 1922.
The A's finished the 1968 season with an 82-80 record. It was their first winning season since 1952 and Bob Kennedy was the manager of the team at that time. With expansion to 12 teams in 1969, the American League was divided into two 6-team divisions.
The Oakland Athletics showed outstanding performance from mid of August till the first week of September in 2002. They were successful in winning an American League record of consecutive twenty games. The concluding three games were dramatic but the outcome was in their favor remaining undecided till 9th inning each time.
The Athletics faced the Philadelphia Phillies in a regular season game in June of 2003 for the first time. Previously they had been competing in exhibition games The City Series. These games were played annually from 1903-1954. The A's had winning record of 123 games to the Phils' 115, with two ties.
