Hofstra Pride also known as The Pride are the athletic teams of the Hofstra University located in Hempstead town, New York. The seventeen men’s and womem’s sports teams play in the NCAA Division I while representing the Colonial Athletic Association. The men’s sports teams are; baseball, basketball, wrestling, tennis, soccer, lacrosse, golf and cross country. Whereas women’s teams include basketball, cross country, volleyball, tennis, softball, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse and golf.
The athletic teams were previously known as The Flying Dutchmen till they were renamed The Pride in 2004. Thus depicting the teams’ logo and the mascot i.e a pair of lions. The present nickname came up in the late 1980s marking one of the most successful periods in the university’s history. After facing a financial crisis in the ‘70s, it was Dr. James M. Shuart who helped the university reclaim its status. Today the athletic department accounts for many outstanding players who have represented the Hofstra University on national level. James M. Shuart Stadium , originally known as Hosftra Stadium opened in 1963. The venue is home to the lacrosse teams and has hosted many major events in the past. The Lacrosse Championship Quarterfinals made headlines for drawing the largest crowd in the history accommodating more than 13,400 people in 2011. In 1999 the quarterfinals were attended by more than 12,200 spectators to watch Hofstra vs John Hopkins. Moreover, in 2009 the quarterfinals featurinf Hofstra vs Syracuse were witnessed by over 10,500 fans. The stadium has also served the Long Island Rough Riders previously. Other prominent events that took place are various conference championship contests, Long Island All-Star Football game, Fun City Bowl etc. the campus comprises the soccer stadium built in 2003. It is undoubtedly a top-notch facility that caters to 16000 people. It has many high school playoff contests while holding NCAA Tournament games twice (2005 and 2006).
Constructed in 1970, this multi-purpose arena can seat up to eight hundred spectators. The arena has been associated with five professional sports teams to date. They are; the New York Nets, the Long Island Knights and Surf, the New York Knicks Summer League team, and New York Liberties. It has also hosted many concerts, banquets, conferences, trade shows and various sports event. Some of them include the 2005’s Hofstra tournament, the exhibition between American and Japanese Olympic teams in 1983 etc.
The Margiotta is another state-of-the-art facility at the Hofstra University. It was built in 1992 covering an area of 22,500 square feet. The building contains weight room, locker rooms for lacrosse teams and a training room on the first floor. The second floor consists of a multi-purpose room for meetings and receptions while the ground floor has a theater accommodating more than 170 seats. After stepping into the darkest times the Hofstra Pride fought back to salvage their career and restore the university’s pride.
