History of The Bulls
The Chicago Bulls began playing in the NBA in 1966. The team's coach was Johnny "Red" Kerr, a former player with the Syracuse Nationals, the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Baltimore Bullets. Its starting lineup on opening night included Len Chappell, Bob Boozer, Don Kojis, Jerry Sloan, and Guy Rodgers. They earned their first victory on October 15, 1966, with a 104-97 win over the St. Louis Hawks. In the team's victorious debut against St. Louis, Rodgers poured in a game-high 37 points. Three days later the Bulls ran their record to 2-0 by defeating the San Francisco Warriors, 119-116. Then, behind 34 points and 18 assists from Rodgers, Chicago upped its winning streak to three games with a 134-124 triumph over the defending Western Division champion Los Angeles Lakers. Chicago finished with a 33-48 record, the best ever by an expansion team in its first year of play. The Bulls secured a playoff berth in the Western Division, but the Hawks eliminated them in the opening round. Kerr was named NBA Coach of the Year.
However, after their initial victory against the St. Louis Hawks, the Chicago Bulls struggled for several years. They were extremely competitive but they were never able to pull off any championship victories. In the 1970's they again became successful with players like Jerry Sloan, Bob Love, and Chet Walker. Other star players in the early 1970's were Artis Gilmore and Reggie Theus. After that The Bulls performance again went down the hill. Their tactics were built around a tough defense line up which ultimately led them to the bottom of the barrel in the eighties.
The Michael Jordan Era
Despite a tactical change to a more offense-driven play the Bulls seemed to be going nowhere fast and needed to do some quick thinking to inject new blood into the team which came in the form of Michael Jordan. He came to Chicago in 1984 to lead his team to win the NBA scoring title, they did, seven times in a row, nine times altogether. He holds the playoff scoring record which is 63 points in one game. Jordan won seven straight scoring titles with a combination of breathtaking slam dunks and a bag of thrilling shot-making tricks. He put up some of the biggest numbers in NBA history and wrote some of the most memorable chapters in the annals of the league. In the early 1990s the Bulls assembled a strong supporting cast for Jordan and won three consecutive NBA titles, becoming only the third franchise in history to string together a trio of crowns. After more than a year of "retirement" to try his hand at professional baseball, Jordan returned to lead the Bulls back to another title in 1996, one more in 1997 and a third in a row in 1998, the Bulls' second Three-peat of the decade and their sixth NBA championship trophy. The star players, Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen made the Chicago Bulls a huge and well known team all over the world.
Major Rivals
The Bulls' chief rivals have been the Detroit Pistons. The two teams met in the playoffs four consecutive years, with the Pistons winning each time until 1991, when the Bulls defeated the Pistons in four games in the Eastern Conference Finals, en route to their first NBA championship. Chicago fans have a disliking for Detroit professional teams, as it is the only city that is in the same division as Chicago in all four major North American sports.
The Bulls also had an intense rivalry with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Unlike the rivalry with the Pistons, in which the two teams have been relatively competitive, the Bulls-Cavs rivalry has been one the more one-sided rivalries, heavily favoring the Bulls. The New York Knicks is the third franchise that the Bulls have competed fiercely with. The two met in the playoffs in four consecutive years (1991-1994), once in 1996. The Bulls triumphed in the first three years (1991-93) before narrowly losing in 1994 but got back at it by beating it in 1996.
