From 1994 to 1999, the bowl was known as CompUSA Florida Citrus Bowl, and altered its name in 2000 to Ourhouse.com Florida Citrus Bowl. A year later, the bowls again changed its name, and became the Capital One Florida Citrus Bowl till 2002. Since 2003, the bowl has been worldwide recognized as the Capital One Bowl.
Capital One Bowl is an enduring game, which does not belong to the BCS bowl. Gathering an approximate count of 9000 audiences, it began play in 1947, and the winner of the first match was the Catawba team, beating the Maryville team. Steadily gaining popularity, the game got known to be as the "Little Bowl with the Big Heart," by 1952, as all the profits generated by the game was contributed to the charity. The game continued featuring matchups between schools throughout the South, often featuring the Ohio Valley Conference champion or other small colleges, until 1968, when it became a major college bowl continuously through 1975. Then the game started featuring a match between two unconfined teams from major conferences, where one school was usually from the South. The ACC Champion against an at large opponent then got featured from 1987 to 1991. Then, in 1992, the game included the top teams from the Big 10 and the SEC, which continues till date.
Ever since the first Capital One Bowl matchup, there have been numerous teams contending in this annual event, which has now become a sort of a tradition. To name a few popular games would include the 1991's National Championship implications, when the team Georgia Tech won the Florida Citrus Bowl, beating the Nebraska, and ultimately being voted as the 1990 UPI national champion. Another significant game worth mentioning here would be the 1998 one, when Florida beat the Penn State, and a record was made in terms of the largest attendance, of 72,940 people.
Capital One, since 2002, has also been sponsoring the annual "Mascot of the Year" contest, where fans are invited to vote for their favorite college mascot. The first mascot to be honored was Monte the Grizzly from Montana, and the one who got selected last year was Cy the Cardinal, belonging to the Iowa State.
