When winter arrives in the valley, we let our breath hang in the air for the season is so awaited despite its cruel hands. The snow starts falling on the rooftops and when the sun shines, it glistens in the air presenting a picturesque allure. When night awakens in the winter season, we forget to walk alone and wish for some comfort that is not forthcoming. The deserted valley becomes our home with its clear and crisp air after a snowfall, leaving our heart miss its beat. This is the time to renew your spirit with a momentous occasion or event that would not make you crave for anything else. We have Winter Games 2010 round the corner scheduled at Vancouver. Amongst other events that promise bliss, Bobsleigh 2010 is an affair that will stay on your mind long after the Olympics are over!
Bobsleigh is a winter sport which is also called bobsledge or bobsled. In this sport teams use a gravity-powered sled to make timed runs down along twisting, banked and narrow iced tracks. The first tracks were developed in St Moritz and the different kinds of sleds were built many years earlier. After those tracks were built, the original bobsleds were upgraded and redesigned so that they could cater as a transport measure by the adventurously wealthy. The boys delivery sleds developed all three types and toboggans. Caspar Badrutt who owned historic Krup Hotel constructed the first 'half-pipe' track-circa 1870. His track is still in use today and has been used during two Olympics.
In many northern countries snow sledding had always been in vogue, but bobsleighing has arrived with an altogether new dimension. It has its origin in two crestas affixed together with a plank apart from carrying a steering mechanism fastened to the front one. The successful launch and vision of hotelman made many English tourists crossed. Before that, Badrutt had made a deal with some of his English regulars and sold them the theme of 'winter resorting'! What he used was a wager as bait since he had some reservations with a four month long season for the accessories he sold. A few years further down the road, some of his more daring English guests started modifying boys' delivery sleds for leisure activities. It became a dangerous activity when they started hitting with onlookers while they would be pacing towards the village's lanes and alleys.
After a lot of concern, special tracks were built with the world's first natural ice half-pipe track being developed around 1870 which serves even today in sporting events. Bobsleighing as a sport has been very popular in Switzerland and Germany, with the sportsmen from these nations winning more championships than any other country. Other countries with strong Bobsleighing traditions are USA, Austria, Canada and Italy.
At the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, the bobsleigh competition is going to be conducted at Whistler Sliding Center. These events will last for a week between 20th and 27th February 2010.
