A fascinating game of American Football is now about to head into town in the form of the Belk Bowl. This one-off match has been a part of the sporting calendar for just over a decade and during that time it has gone on showcase everything that makes the sport loved and followed by millions around the country. Now that the latest edition is not too far away, this is your chance to buy Belk Bowl tickets and catch the action live.
The Belk Bowl is held annually at the magnificent "Bank of America Stadium" in Charlotte. The city itself was deprived of a stadium good enough to play host to a game this big. That all however changed in the year 1996 when the "Bank of America Stadium" opened its gates for the masses. "Carolina Panthers" didn't take too long to move into the facility and business was underway at the brand new arena. The construction of the arena was a big moment as it gave people of the region the kind of stadium they had always wanted and also paved the way for a bowl game to be held in Charlotte.
The "Raycom Sports" management then started to devise a way to bring an NCAA bowl game to the Bank of American Stadium. Ken Haines, the CEO then went to work and began to hold a string of meetings with people from the region and other businessmen to turn that dream into a reality. Pat McCroy, the mayor gave his backing to the project and so did the Richardson family, owners of the Bank of America Stadium.
Once that was done, a presentation was made that was then put forward to the NCAA, on 1st May, 2002, in order to get them to sanction the game. NCAA took just once to approve the game. 8th December, 2002 saw Virginia and West Virginia agree to send their football teams to take part in the inaugural edition. The first ever Belk Bowl was played on 28th December, 2002 which was attended by a mammoth crowd of seventy five thousand five hundred and thirty five. Another forty thousand fans made it to entertainment festivities surrounding the game. Virginia won the game by a forty eight to twenty two score.
The Belk Bowl has undergone some changes in the format as well over the years. It now features teams from the "Atlantic Coast Conference" and the "American Athletic Conference." Virginia, Boston College and North Carolina State head the list of colleges with most wins with two triumphs each.
The latest edition of this wonderful football extravaganza once again promises to be one epic occasion. It is once again expected to live up to expectations which have seen football fans from all over the country come to be a part of it every year.
