Baltimore City Council's President, Frank Remesch announced the resurgence of the Baltimore Hockey Classic event. First held in 2011, in which the Washington Capitals took on the Nashville Predators at the fully occupied 1st Mariner Arena, the upcoming event is expected to sell out yet another game, at the facility. With over eleven thousand spectators expected to attend the upcoming game in which the Washington Capitals will be challenging the Boston Bruins, the Baltimore Hockey Classic is a must-see. The forthcoming hockey spectacle will be taking place once again at the 1st Mariner Arena, also known as the Baltimore Arena. Constructed in 1962, the sport's complex is located in downtown Baltimore hosting a variety of events from basketball games to ice hockey events, soccer competitions, boxing and wrestling matches and football showcases. The venue is also known to host concerts with the first concert performance being given by the legendary band The Beatles in 1964.
Prior to being named the 1st Mariner Arena ever since the Mariner Bank secured the naming rights in 2003, the stadium was called "the Baltimore Civic Center". For each event that is held at the arena, eleven thousand to fourteen thousand people can be catered to. The debut game that was held in 2011 marked one of the first professional hockey games that were held in the area for over thirteen years. Founded in 1974, the Washington Capitals is an NHL ice hockey franchise with its roots set in Washington. Currently known to dominate Eastern Conference's Southeast Division, the Capitals team colors are white, navy and red. The team that is coached by Adam Oates with George McPhee as the general manager has been able to bag eight Division Championships, a Presidents' Trophy in 2009-10 and a Conference Championship in 1997-98. The Capitals have produced several Hall of Famers including Dino Ciccarelli, Mike Gartner, Rod Langway, Larry Murphy, Adam Oates and Scott Stevens.
The Capitals will be competing with a team that shares a similar career, the Boston Bruins. Established in 1924, the Bruins are a Boston based professional ice hockey team. They also compete in Eastern Conference's Northeast Division of the NHL. The Bruins are amongst the three oldest ice hockey teams in the United States, apart from also being one of the original six franchises. With a longstanding career that has garnered a massive amount of twenty four Division Championships, six Stanley Cups, four Conference Championships and a Presidents' Trophy; the Bruins are a force to reckon with.
