A circus named as the UniverSoul Circus was born in 1994. The purpose was to explore the various talents other than singing and dancing that black performers had to offer. We had the idea to present something different as well as to create a show that presented a wide spectrum of black talent to a wide demographic of spectators.

To reach deep into our culture and search for what talent and skills lie asleep in the black entertainment experience. We wanted to apply our gathered years of experience in the live appearance industry plus to make a difference, to change the industry we lived in, creating growth and new opportunity.

Our journey had been started in libraries, first researching black entertainment from the turn of the century, until today. We came across a black circus operating. I envisioned hip-hop musicals as well as a return to vaudeville and animal acts. That's when the decision was made to create a full-blown big top circus.

Now the first step was to find black circus performers. But the point was where would we find them? What and how could we do to express our culture through circus arts? In what form or forum would the presentation take place? Well, as the saying goes, ‘if you take the first step Providence moves in', all sorts of things started happening in your favor and you get various opportunities to avail.

Few weeks later, while walking through a Black Expo, the corner of my eye caught one particular booth. The sign said ‘Of Blacks and Circus Rings'.

I was shocked and stunned. I couldn't believe on my eyes what I was seeing at that moment. This vendor had artifacts, pictures, videos and in-depth knowledge of African American contributions to the circus industry.

The vendor led us to Prince BoJino, one of the first black lion tamers. He helped us, organize training for animal acts. He also introduced us to legendary black performers who helped us pull it all together. The process of recruiting, training and production began.

Three weeks before the opening, I paid a visit to the training facility. It was clear that the person we chose wasn't working out. After watching rehearsals all that has started flashing in my mind was possible the headlines ‘First Black Circus, Tiger eats Trainer on Opening Day'. So I fired the guy.

I was three weeks away from advertising this black lion tamer. It was 11 p.m when I was sitting in the office and saying to myself, ‘Okay Cedric, you've really done it this time. Now you've got to go into the lion's cage'.

I was attempting to convince myself that I could do it, when, thanks to you Jesus, I thought about my ‘crazy' cousin who lived with three 14 feet boa constrictors in his bedroom. I talked with him and he became ready to join the circus.

The idea was successful but the first show lost every penny. By 2005 the circus tour had grown to 32 cities that was its first international destination. Tony Tone, an America's hippest Ringmaster who engages the audiences between acts offering message of hope and inspiration.

The UniverSoul Circus would not be complete without the Zeke who might just show up in your aisle to offer a hug, kind words or even pull you into the ring to dance with him.

‘El Nichi & The Tigers of Soul' was the Tiger Act held in South America. This act involved six tigers in cage and one male trainer performing various tricks. Another comedy trapeze ‘The Brotherhood' was held in Capetown and Johannesburg, South Africa. It involved three male aerial acrobatics performing comedic stunts on single trapeze.

‘Noah's' Ark featuring Andre the Great was a Mixed Animal Act. Andre the Great guided the most unusual combination of animals two by two around the ring. Like Noah's Ark there are two camels, two llamas, two zebras and two ponies in synchronized movements around the ring.

Sheer Romance was the Dual Silk Aerial Act, held in Auckland, New Zealand and Brazil. In which male and female aerial act performed while flying through the air suspended only by two long, flowing pieces of silk.
