A Scottish alternative rock band from Glasgow, Travis enlists Fran Healy on lead vocals, guitar, piano, banjo; Dougie Payne on bass guitar, backing vocals; Andy Dunlop on lead guitar, banjo, keyboards, backing vocals; and Neil Primrose on drums, percussion.
Travis have been noted for their extremely energetic live performances and their singing has undoubtedly earned them a satisfied audience. The band is often credited with having paved the way for bands such as Coldplay, Keane and Snow Patrol.
Travis released their debut album Good Feeling in 1997 and to-date they have issued six studio albums. Listen to the potential music of Travis that will surely run you over and make you rock.
The band Travis, initially called Running Red, and later, Glass Onion, was formed by brothers Chris and Geoff Martyn. The brothers were joined by Andy Dunlop as guitarist, Neil Primrose as drummer. Female vocalist, Catherine Maxwell, completed the line up for then-called Glass Onion.
She quit Glass Onion in 1991 and was replaced by Fran Healy. A musically untrained art student, Fran Healy, joined after being invited to audition by Primrose. Two years later, with the option of music holding more appeal, he dropped out of art school. Healy was inspired by song writers such as Joni Mitchell.
In 1993, the fivesome came up with a privately made CD, The Glass Onion EP. The EP featured the tracks Dream On, The Day Before, Free Soul and Whenever She Comes Round.
The band won a talent contest organized by the Music in Scotland Trust, and was awarded with ?2,000 so that Travis could deal-hunt at a new music seminar in New York. However, two weeks prior to their leave, the prize was instead given to the Music in Scotland Trust Directory which seemed to feature every single band in Scotland except for them.
While on a visit to Scotland, American engineer and producer Niko Bolas, a long-time Neil Young and Rolling Stones associate, tuned into a Travis session on Radio Scotland. Bolas heard something in Traviss music which instantly made him travel to Perth to see them.
Recalling that Fran Healy said that he took us in the studio for four days, and taught us how to play properly, like a band. Bolas was bolshy, rude, and New York pushy and didn't believe my lyrics. He told Healy to write what he believed in and not tell lies. All I Want To Do Is Rock was the band's first single, recorded with ?600 from Healy's mother.
Three years later, when Travis performed in New York and the band dedicated All I Want to Do Is Rock to Bolas who was in the audience: he wept. Bolas proved to be Mary Poppins who sorted Travis out. After a course of hiatus, Healy emerged with a clear vision of where he now wanted Travis and their music to go. He dispensed with the band's management, their publicity agent, and the keyboard player, Geoff Martyn. Healy also replaced the bassist, Geoff's brother, Chris, with best friend Dougie Payne. Payne was another art student and a Levi's shop assistant.
Two weeks later, with Payne having completed a crash course on bass in his bedroom, Travis played together for the first time in a free space above the Horse Shoe Bar. In 2001, the band appeared with the album called The Invisible Band, again produced by Nigel Godrich. The title of the album reflects the band's genuine belief that their music is more important than the group behind it.
The album featured songs such as Sing, Side, the McCartneyesque Flowers in the Window, Indefinitely, Pipe Dreams and The Cage. Sing was the most played song on British radio that summer while the album was recorded at Ocean Way Studios in Los Angeles.
Traviss the Invisible Band again made No. 1 on the British charts, generally received widespread critical acclaim. Receiving Top of the Pops Album of the Year award, the album earned the band another Best British Band at the annual BRIT Awards title. However, little cracks had started appearing by the end of 2001, around the time of The Invisible Band.
The following year, things came to a screeching halt for Travis. While on tour in France and the band almost called it quits after drummer, Neil Primrose, jumped head-first into a shallow swimming pool. He broke his neck, and suffered spinal damage. Despite the severity of the accident, Primrose has since made a full recovery.
With Primrose having recovered, Travis reorganized and re-evaluated. Relocating to a cottage in Crear, West Scotland, the band members set up a small studio, and over two weeks, appeared with nine new songs. These songs would form the basis of Travis fourth studio album, entitled 2003's 12 Memories.
The album was produced by Travis themselves, Tchad Blake, and Steve Orchard. 2003s 12 Memories marked a move into more organic, moody and political territory for Travis. In 2004, the band embarked on a highly successful tour of the US and Europe which was supported by Keane in the UK.
In 2005, Travis came up with a successful compilation of their singles, Singles. They also produced a series of the new tracks such as Walking in the Sun and The Distance. The Distance was written by Dougie Payne. Followed to these releases was an array of small, intimate gigs at UK venues such as Liverpool's Cavern Club, London's Mean Fiddler, and Glasgow's Barrowlands.
Travis also made a series of impromptu acoustic busks while on tour and raised money for the charity The Big Issue. Aside from these performances, the band also headlined the 2005 Isle of Wight Festival and T in the Park.
In the mid of 2005, Travis played at Live 8's London concert, and four days later, at the Edinburgh 50,000 - The Final Push concert. The band also actively took part in Band Aid 20's re-recording of Do They Know It's Christmas?.
