The Tubes belongs to Phoenix, Arizona. It was founded in 1972 by a group of gifted rockers. The initial lineup consisted of guitarist Bill Spooner, lead singer Fee Waybill, drummer Prairie Prince, pianist Vince Welnick, bassist Rick Anderson and guitarist Roger Steel. Vocalist Re Styles, percussionist Mingo Lewis and synthesizer expert Michael Cotton were also regular performers with the band during the early years. The group mainly focused on genres like punk rock, hard rock and rock with lyrics focusing on various political and media issues and also consumerism. The band initially started with performances at local clubs and also did underground gigs. It was first noticed by A&M Records label that went on to released the group’s first album. During the career The Tubes has worked with a number of labels like A&M, Capitol Records, CMC, Acadia Records UK, Snapper and Cherry Red Records.
The first album by The Tubes was self-titled. Released in 1975, it immediately got the attention of the listeners and managed to enter the US Billboard charts at #113. The very next year another album Young and Rich was released through A&M that improved the overall band position on Billboard by landing at #46. The more albums followed namely Now (1977), What Do You Want from Love (1978) and Remote Control (1979). All three entered Billboard but the last two albums were the first ones by The Tubes that managed to enter the UK charts at #38 and #40 respectively. In 1981 The Tubes released two albums back to back, one was a compilation album by A&M Records titled T.R.A.S.H whereas the second one was titled The Completion Backward Principle released by Capitol Records. The Completion Backward Principle till date is the only album by the group that managed to sell around half a million copies in Canada earning a gold status. From here onwards Capitol Records released three more studio albums by the bad including Outside Inside (1983), Love Bomb (1985) and The Best of the Tubes (1992). Outside Inside till date remains the band’s highest charting album till date.
Some other albums by The Tubes include Genius of America, Hoods from Outer Space, White Punks on Dope, Wild in London, Alive in America, Goin’ Down the Tubes and Mondo Birthmark. Hit singles of the group include “Don’t Touch Me There”, “Prime Time”, White Punks on Dope, “Tip of My Tongue”, “The Monkey Time”, “Don’t Want to Wait Anymore” and “Gonna Get it Next Time”. “She’s is a Beauty” was single by The Tubes from the album Outside Inside that remains the highest charting single by the band till date. It was the only single by The Tubes that went on to hit the #1 spot on US Mainstream Rock Tracks, it also landed at #79 in UK and #10 on US Billboard.
