Emerging as a rock band in 1984 to mesmerize the music lovers. Soundgarden is a Seattle, Washington based band that popularized the grunge genre in the alternative rock music. Formed with the union of three members, Soundgarden has reached the heights of glory in 1994 when it launched its album Superunknown. The album debut the Billboard charts at number one and had the honor of grabbing a Grammy Award for the singles Spoonman and Black Hole Sun.

With the lead singer Chris Cornell and Kim Thayil and Hiro Yamamoto as the lead guitarist and bassist, the band faced a number of internal band issues that forced them to break up in 1997.while in 2010, the band reunited itself and emerged with a rejuvenated spirit. A reunion concert Nudedragons was organized which sold more than nine million records in United States alone and almost twenty one million records around the globe.

The band came into the forefront way back in 80's when Yamamato and Cornell performed in Seattle under the band name The Shemps. Later Thayil joined the group and in 1984, Soundgarden emerged as a music band with the inspiration from The Sound Garden, a wind-channeling pipe sculpture located at MagnusonPark, Seattle. After much appreciated performances, Soundgarden signed to Sub Pop and released their first single Hunted Down in 1987. In 1988, SST Records a small label was signed to release the debut album Ultramega OK. After performing overseas tours, Ultramega OK had the honor of being nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 1990.

While touring for Ultramega OK the band signed with A&M Records. Although the traditional audience did not approve of this idea, yet the band continuously began working on its debut album for a major label. Louder Than Love finally turned out to be the band's first album to hit Billboard 200 charts at number 108 in 1990. The made underwent a great struggling career by then and they were yearning for a smashing break. With the touring of Louder Than Love, Yamamoto left the band for studies and also with the guilt that he was unable to contribute much for the band. Jason Everman was later replaced who had earlier been working for Nirvana. Eventually as the tour was over Jason was also fired from the band as he did not meet the requirements of the band as perceived by the members.

With Ben Shepherd entering the band as bassist replacing Jason, the band started working on their next album. With Ben a new wave of music and inspiration emerged into the band which triggered a positive approach in the members towards creativity. Finally Badmotorfinger was released in 1991, which faced several criticisms but still emerged to be a success. The album was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 1992. Rated as the top 100 selling albums of 1992, the album made a reasonable business too. The band members learnt a lot from their past experiences and thus while working for their fourth album, they planned to give immense freedom to all the members of the band thus bringing out the flair of creativity from them. Eventually a breakthrough album Superunknown was released in 1994 with hit singles like Black Hole Sun, Fell on Black Days, The Day I Tried to Live and Spoonman. Reaching number one on the Billboard 200 album chart, Superunknown debuted the hearts of millions too. The album had mysterious and bleak images portrayed through out the album. The recurrent issues of abuse, depression and suicide were all dominant in the songs. Winning the MTV awards as well as Grammy Awards, the album was certified as five times platinum in the United States, thus making it the most successful album of Soundgarden.

Following the success of the album, Soundgarden faced internal issues and all the members became busy in their own activities, however, the band reappeared on the music scene in 2010. With the hope to release their new album in 2011, Soundgarden is all set for their revival in the industry and in the hearts of its fans.
