Groundation is a roots reggae band from California. It was formed in 1998 by Harrison Stafford, Marcus Urani and Ryan Newman. In 1999, they founded the record label Young Tree Records with which they recorded their first album, called Young Tree. The name of the album comes from the idea of being all on one level (on ground floor) and to learn as equals from there with no hierarchies or social classes. In most of their songs, this band uses percussion style nyabinghi, which was used in religious assemblies Rastafarians grounations that had the idea of all being equal. The band also contains a jazz influence in the execution of their wind instruments.
Another band which is going to be performing at this exciting music festival is Inner Circle. It is a reggae band which originated in Jamaica. It was formed in the year 1968 by the brothers Ian and Roger Lewis. Among their most popular songs include Summer Jammin, Sweat, Games People Play and Bad Boys which was the theme song for the TV series called COPS.
Inner Circle released their first album in 1974 under the label Trojan Records. Then they recorded Everything Is Great in the year 1979 at Island Records. It went on to reach the top 20 charts in the United Kingdom. The band's style was decisively marked by one of its original members and lead singer Jacob Miller, who died in a car accident on March 23rd, 1980.
After the loss of Jacob Miller, the band split in 1982, after the release of another album entitled Something So Good. Finally in 1986, the brothers Lewis decided to reset the group and return with a new vocalist, Calton Coffie who would launch a new album called Black Roses. In 1989, they performed the song Bad Boys and began to call themselves The Bad Boys of Reggae. Another great success would come in 1992 with the song Sweat (A La La La La Long).
Apart from Inner Circle, Mykal Rose is also going to be gracing the stage at the Reggae on The Rocks festival. He was born on July 11th, 1957 in Kingston and is a Jamaican reggae singer. He gained fame as a singer of Black Uhuru. Michael Rose gained inspiration from many reggae artists in his youth such as The Wailers, Gregory Isaacs, Big Youth, Sly & Robbie and Dennis Brown.
Mykal Rose has written many successful songs for his band, until he left the band in the year 1985 after the release of their album, Anthem. He has released several solo albums since then, which among other things have had success in Europe and Japan. Since the year 2004, Michael Rose has been active as a solo artist.
Reggae is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the 1960s and is a synthesis of Ska and Rocksteady. It also draws its inspiration from other styles of music such as; rhythm and blues(R&B), jazz and mento. Reggae is not just a music genre it is of paramount importance as it is a representation of Jamaican culture and their inspirations in true sense of the word. Thus, the genre has grown by leaps and bounds since its inception and has today developed into a global phenomenon. Reggae is an outcome of the painful ordeal faced by the people from the ghettos of Kingston in Jamaica. It was a voice of the oppressed belonging to the Trench Town. As many suffered at the hands of political leaders, their heart-wrenching cries imbued with anguish and pain later transformed into what we know now as the reggae music. Thus, The Abbysinians, Toots and the Maytals, The Pragons, Wailing Souls, Ernest Rangling, Dean Fraser, The Techniques are among many the Trench Town was home to. But above all it is Bob Marley who is considered to be one of the most influential reggae singers of all time. Also referred to as the "King of Reggae", his songs Trenchtown, Trenchtown Rock, Natty Dread and No Woman, No Cry are reflective of his association with the Trench Town.
Moreover, there are countless reggae artists who have left an impact through their music and touched the hearts of millions. Although some of them are not with us today but their undying music has never for a moment ceased to inspire us. Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown, Winston Foster, Sizzla, Jimmy Cliff, Marcia Griffiths, U-Roy and Gregory Isaacs are just to name a few. In addition to Reggae on the Rocks, Midwest Reggae Festival, Reggae in the Park, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, Reggae in the Desert, Lake Tahoe Reggae Festival, Reggae on the River, Reggae in the Hills, Reggae at the Lake and Woodbury Ski Area's 40th Annual Reggae Fest are just a few among an infinite number of festivals that are solely dedicated to celebrating reggae music.
To give the fans an extra scoop of reggae music there have been several live reggae albums that have come out. However the one that is to look out for is from the 1998 Reggae on the Rocks festival that took place in Colorado. It encompasses songs by Justin Hinds & the Dominoes, the Long Beach Dub Allstars, Majek Fashek, Heavyweight Dub Champion and Boukman Eksperyans with their utterly enthralling songs; Astro Dub, Teach the Youth, Whirwinds of Revolt, Carry Go Bring Come, African Unity, Majek Beware, I and I Survive, Tipa Tipa and Mariaj a Zaka. However, this year's line-up includes: the twice Grammy Award winner Burning Spear; The Meditations who are known for their recent song releases Stand in Love, Woman is like a Shadow and the System Promo; Yellow Dubmarine who have always made headlines for their captivating live performances, others joining the stage will be Steel Pulse and Judge Roughneck. So gear up for the forthcoming event and buy Reggae on the Rocks tickets as this event only comes around annually. Moreover, the powerful line-up is another aspect that makes it a must-see event.
