After this catastrophe, May started gaining weight, and at one point of his life, his weight went as up as 800 pounds. Later however, May started losing his immense amount of weight that was followed by a gastric bypass surgery. He further, reportedly lost 27 pounds as he featured himself on a show televised in 2005 named Celebrity Fit Club. Another 100 pounds were put off from his body as he kept on losing weight, even after the conclusion of the show, and still continues to do so. For him his journey as a comedian started back when he was 17 years of age and he took part in a comedy competition, the winner of which would get a chance to open for Sam Kinison. After winning the competition he opened for Sam Kinison with a performances that Kinison himself cited to be the 'funniest thing I have ever seen in my life.'

May married his fellow comedian, Lahna Turner back in 2005 on July 3, and has two children from her; a girl, named April June May and a boy, named August James May. May compiled best of all his acts on one DVD and released his first DVD titled 'Just Correct', which came out on February 10, 2004 from Melee Entertainment. Following the substantial amount of sales and success of the DVD, it has new officially received Platinum status. The content on the DVD received positive reviews overall and is cited to give some of the best laughs that you can get out of a standup comedy act. The DVD also covers his comedy acts, which he did, while on his USO tour to Iraq.

Due to his witty humor, well placed and well timed clever comments, his fame has now crossed borders and has earned fame and success all over the globe. Ralphie May released his second DVD, titled 'Girth of a Nation', back in the fall of 2006. The DVD featured the comedy act that he did back in the April of 2006 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
