KCON is a yearly K-Pop convention and festival held in the US. It was first organized in 2012, founded by Mnet Media, a South Korean record label. Formed to celebrate K-Pop in the US, as well as give fans of K-Pop an opportunity to meet and listen to the greatest K-Pop artists. It is also the place to meet other fans of South Korean music, with the festival praised by CNN. It marks the growing popularity of K-Pop in the US, as seen by more than ten thousand people who attended the convention and festival in 2012. For fans of K-Pop, KCON tickets are absolutely essential.
KCON 2012 received great reviews from Wall Street Journal. The convention was organized in Irvine, California at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre. Artists who performed live include 4 Minute, Exo-M, B.A.P, Nu'est, G.NA and VIXX. The event was a massive success, as seen by thousands who attended it. In the media, Billboard magazine praised it with an amazing review, stating that it provided a 'new look at a world of music'. Billboard magazine went so far as to predict that the first convention would 'kick-start what may be an annual music tradition'. The Verge praised the concerts and the K-Pop bands who performed, many of them were visiting the US for the first time ever. The Orange County Register dubbed it as a 'daylong K-Pop invasion'.
KCON 2013 is set to play host to a large number of famous K-Pop artists and bands, including EXO (K & M), Teen Top, 2AM, f(x), Dynamic Duo, G-Dragon, Yu Seung Woo and DJ Koo. The US's very own hip hop legend, Missy Elliot, is also set to perform at this event. One of the greatest hip hop and R&B artists alive today, her music has sold more than thirty million albums in the US alone.
Exo is one of the headliners at this year's K-Pop celebration in the US. From Seoul, South Korea, the band has been active since 2011 and has quickly risen up, gaining the attention of millions in South Korea and abroad. Signed onto S.M. Entertainment, they have released a number of albums and have been associated with such bands as SM Town. A sensational boy band, its members today are Kris, Suho, Xiumin, Lu Han, Lay, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, D.O., Tao, Kai and Sehun. They are divided into two bands; Exo-M, performing music in Mandarin and Exo-K, performing music in Korean.
Theirs albums have topped Korean charts and even ranked seventh on the YouTube Global Charts. Their first two albums have sold more than a million copies globally with one of their songs, Wolf, ranking first in Korea and winning the three major music awards in Korea. As 2012's best new band in Korea, they have won fourteen awards from a total of twenty six nominations.
2AM is yet another K-Pop band from Seoul. It is quite a surprise that until a few years ago, no one knew that South Korea had a music industry. Its albums and songs have gained popularity in South Korea, China and Japan. Their music has been released by record labels such as Ariola Japan, JYP Entertainment, Big Hit Entertainment and United Asia Management. They have played with the likes of One Day, JYP Nation, 2PM and Miss A. They have won two Golden Disk Awards, two Seoul Music Awards, one Mnet Asian Music Awards, two Melon Music Awards and several Cyworld Digital Music Awards.
