Jerry Douglas is considered to be one of the most influential and accomplished musician of his generation. The Jerry Douglas Band’s story began with Douglas’ life that began in Ohio in 1956 as an entry into a musical family. His father was a musician and played in a bluegrass band. No wonder, he developed an interest in the playing the Dobro as a child and by the time he was a teenager, he was already playing regularly in the small-time family band. Douglas got his first real break into the commercial music world when he was offered to play on tour with the Country Gentlemen. The band was apparently impressed by his playing at a local fair and offered him a seat. Their partnership went well and lead to Douglas working with them on their next album.
Jerry Douglas’ experience with the Country Gentlemen held him a niche for himself as an extremely popular session musicians. Working over the decades with such acts as Doyle Lawson, David Grisman, Béla Fleck, Peter Rowan, Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Del McCoury, Garth Brooks, Suzy Bogguss, Reba McEntire, Kathy Mattea, and Dolly Parton he polished his music making sill. He further went on to discover his music self as was able to do much work as a successful solo artist as well.
As a solo artist, Jerry Douglas started off by releasing two albums that were pretty much straight up bluegrass. He alongside with the Jerry Douglas Band he worked on his studio albums and toured across the US. The first album Fluxology was released in 1979 and was followed by Fluxedo in 1982. By the mid eighties, Douglas had become one of the biggest supporters of the progressive newgrass movement. The 1986 album Under the Wire on Sugar Hill came out that clearly reflected these new interests. In 1989 Plant Early became his first groundbreaking effort. It was a very successful experiment as it fused elements of jazz into Douglas’s playing. The 1992 album Slide Rule saw him go back to his roots; an album that most critics consider his finest moment. In 1994, Douglas was involved in the Grammy winning album, Great Dobro Sessions. The next significant release was Restless on the Farm in 1998, which recaptured Jerry Douglas Band’s spirit for musical creativity and adventure. Over the next decade Douglas and the band released a number of significant albums, culminating in 2008’s musical roller coaster Glide.
Jerry Douglas has had a career full of awards and recognitions. He was awarded the National Heritage Fellowship for his lifetime of work by The National Endowment for the Arts. Over the years he has been nominated for Grammy awards dozens of times and has taken home at least thirteen Grammies! He has been a favorite on the CMA awards as well, where he has been awarded the Musician of the Year title in 2002, 2005 and 2007. Quite predictably, Douglas was entered into the Country Music Hall of Fame with much fanfare in 2008. Last but not the least, the AMA presented him a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.
