Derek Trucks stands amongst some of the finest guitarists of our time. Trucks is also one of the child prodigy musicians, as he started playing guitar at the age of 9. He was born in Jacksonville, FL on June 8, 1979 in a family who had an established musical background. Derek initially started playing with his uncle Butch Trucks, who was a member of The Allman Brothers band. Derek Trucks got his first acoustic guitar at the age of 9 from a yard sale for $5. As he started playing with his uncle Butch Trucks, Derek Trucks started playing as session guitarist with some of the high profile musicians of that time, by the age of 12. During the same time, Trucks also frequently toured with the Allman Brothers Band as the guitarist.

After playing with the Allman Brother Band on several tours, Derek Trucks became a full member of the band in 1999, and became one of the two permanent guitarist of the band' a position that he still holds. In 2003, Trucks also performed on the Allman Brothers Band's studio release Hittin' the Note and also on one of band's live DVDs, Live at the Beacon Theatre. Also in 2003, Trucks was also featured on the cover of the Rolling Stone magazine, and was ranked at the #81 spot in the list of Top 100 Guitarists of All time.

Apart from playing for the Allman Brothers Band, Trucks also formed up his own band, The Derek Trucks Band, by the time he was only 12. Initially the band was named Derek and the Dominators; however, this was changed to the current name later on in 1994. In 1994, Trucks inducted the very first member of the band, Todd Smallie, who was the former bassist of the band Atlanta. Smallie also remains the current band member of the Derek Trucks band. The second band member of the Derek Trucks band was the drummer Yonrico Scott, who was inducted in the band, the following year. As the rhythm section of the band was now complete, the band started recording their self titled debut album and released it in 1997. The album was produced by John Snyder and was released on Landslide Records. Derek Trucks released his second studio album with his band on October 20, 1998, entitled Out of the Madness. The album was once again produced by John Snyder and was released on House of Blues.

After that, the Derek Trucks Band welcomed a new member to its crew, Kofi Burbridge, who was a multi instrumentalist and played Keyboards, Flute and vocals for the band. In 2002, Mike Mattison was also inducted in the band as the lead vocalist of the band. Apart from that Mattison was already in a duo named Scrapomatic, and still sings for Scrapomatic at live performances, occasionally. Count M'Butu is the only band member of the Derek Trucks band who appears rarely on band's live performances and plays different kinds of African Drums and percussion.

After the line up was complete, the band released its third studio album titled Joyful Noise on September 3, 2002. The album was produced by Russ Kunkel and Craig Street and also featured guest stars including Derek's wife Susan Tedeschi and Solomon Burke. Like their previous albums, Joyful noise also gained positive reviews from fans and critics alike. In this album Trucks flaunted his talent with Sarod, showing that he is a lot more than just a slide guitarist for the Allman Brother Band.

Derek Trucks released his fourth studio album, Soul Serenade, with his band on August 5, 2003 on Columbia Records. The album was produced by John Snyder and by Derek Trucks himself. Although Soul Serenade was recorded prior to the release of Joyful Noise, but due to legal issues, its release was delayed hence making it Derek's fourth studio Album.

Derek Trucks released his latest album Already Free this year on January 13, 2009 on Legacy Recordings in United States and Columbia Records released the album in Europe on February 20. The album was entirely produced by Derek Trucks himself and contained 12 tracks. The album was also released on Best Buy and featured three bonus tracks, while the iTunes version featured another bonus track.

Currently Derek Trucks is on concert tour with his band, which commenced on April 15, 2009. Discounted Derek Trucks tickets are on sale for the upcoming live performances by the band. The band will conclude this tour on September 13, 2009 at the Belk Theatre in Charlotte, North Carolina.
