This Grammy Award-winning hip hop group is best known for its eclectic sampling and their quirky, surreal lyrics. They are also credited as a major contributor to the evolution of the jazz rap subgenre.
De La Soul is soulful band whose members are Kelvin Mercer, David Jude Jolicoeur and Vincent Mason. The three formed the group in high school as they all shared a love and passion for good music.
They started playing in small events and also prepared a demo version of the song ?Plug Tunin? that caught the attention of producer Paul Huston. The band made its musical debut in the late eighties with an impeccable album ?3 Feet High and Rising?.

The album stood for its playful wordplay, innovative sampling, and witty skits.The album did not only get commercial success but it was hailed as a hip-hop masterpiece by the critics as well.
While 3 Feet High and Rising was more hip-hop in its approach with hit songs like Me, Myself and I and others; it put light on issues like striving for peace and harmony.It was honored as the Album of the Year by NME Magazine, a title better known for its taste in guitar-based music.
What makes De La Soul unique among others is their popularity outside the United States especially in Germany. Their debut album, originally released in 1989 was made available in Germany in August 1988.It was a critical smash hit there and shattered many records in the hip hop genre.
This has made them to quickly become one of the prominent members of the Native Tongues Posse along with bands like A Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep, Queen Latifah, The Jungle Brothers and others.Today, they stand as the longest standing Native Tongues Posse group, after the Jungle Brothers.
Their second album was titled De La Soul Is Dead. The album was released in 1991and proved a much more mature album. The album was a comment on the violent and careless direction of hip hop at the time, but it still managed to maintain a light and absurd sense of humor.
The album spawned several singles, including the dark Millie Pulled A Pistol on Santa and the lead single Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey), both proved instant hits.
Fanatic Of The B Word, A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays and Pass the Plugs are among the other significant tracks from the album. The album became a cult classic and was listed amongst top 100 Hip Hop albums of all time by Score magazine.
Buhloone Mindstate was their next outing that was released in 1993. The album saw the group cementing their position as mainstays of the alternative hip hop movement as they evolve a new sound through this work.Stakes Is High was released in 1996.
It was the sole effort of the trio De LA Soul as it was not produced by Prince Paul. The album proved a launching pad for future star rapper and actor Mos Def, who appeared on the track Big Brother Beat. Two singles that specially made their mark were Itsoweezee and 4 More featuring Zhane.
Next came another surprise package by De La Soul Art Official Intelligence. Popularly known as AOI, this was a series of albums maintained the position of the band in the 2000?s as well.The Grind Date was another album that was released in 2004.
The album received both critical acclaim and audience?s acceptance.The year 2005 saw a highlight for the band when their hit single Feel Good Inc won a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Collaboration.
They collaborated with Gorillaz for this track. The single became a huge hit, further cementing the group's popularity.
De La Soul has emerged from the high school band to one of the most loved artists of the nation.They received high praise from critics and good turn out in their live shows.
