Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen, born on September 23, 1949 is a popular American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He is well known for his unique music style of heartland rock mixed with pop and deep lyrics. His ability to write songs about the lives and emotions of ordinary people and particularly his own life in his home town of New Jersey, has hit home not only with the American public but has gained him recognition the world over. The stars musical talent and songwriting ability has earned him numerous awards, including fifteen Grammy Awards and an Oscar, and over 60 million albums sold in the US alone. His most famous albums are Born to Run and Born in the U.S.A.
In addition to his music style, it was Springsteen's lyrics, often about common men and women struggling to make ends meet that made him popular with his fans. Through his music he has also gradually identified himself with progressive politics. Springsteen is also noted for his support of various relief and rebuilding efforts in New Jersey and elsewhere, and for his response to the September 11, 2001 attacks, greatly reflected in his album The Rising.
Springsteen's recordings have typically been a mix of commercially successful rock albums and somber folk-oriented music. Much of the star's iconic status stems from his concerts and marathon shows in which he and the E Street Band alternate between intense love songs, inspiring anthems and lively rock and roll tunes, with Springsteen narrating deeply emotional stories in between.
Springsteen earned himself the famous nickname "The Boss," early on in his career, when while playing club gigs in the 60s he took on the task of collecting and distributing the band's nightly pay. Although he was originally reported to dislike the name he still refers to himself as the Boss during his stage performances.
Springsteen's Early Life
Springsteen was born in 1949 in Freehold, New Jersey. His father, Douglas Frederick Springsteen, was a bus driver and his mother, Adele Ann Zirilli, a legal secretary of Italian ancestry. He was the middle child of three siblings, older sister Virginia and younger sister, Pamela. Springsteen was raised a Roman Catholic and was sent to attended the St. Rose of Lima parochial school in Freehold Borough. However, from an early age Springsteen had a difficult time at school unable to get along with the teachers and other students. In the ninth grade he transferred to the public Freehold Borough High School, but again did not fit in. Although Springsteen managed to complete high school, his uneasiness and inability to fit in prevented him from attending his own graduation ceremony. Springsteen attempted college but dropped out soon after.
The start of his music career
Springsteen began to show his inclination towards music at the tender age of seven. Encouraged by his mother, he learnt how to play the guitar and eventually became the lead guitarist of a small band called the Castiles at the age of 16. From 1969 to 1971 Springsteen joined a band called Child and performed in various clubs around New Jersey, meeting a number of musicians who would later go on to form the core of the famous E Street Band. During this time Springsteen formed a number of bands including Dr. Zoom and the Sonic Boom, the Sundance Blues Band and the Bruce Springsteen Band.
It was in 1972 that Springsteen received his big break when he attracted the attention of manager Mike Appel and signed a record deal with Columbia Records with the help of John Hammond who had also signed on Bob Dylan in the early 60s. In January 1973, Springsteen released his debut album titled Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. Although the album established Springsteen as a talented musician and songwriter the album sales were slow. In 1973, he released his second album, The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle. Again, the album gained critical acclaim but was not a commercial success.
In 1974, famous music critic Jon Landau, after seeing a Springsteen performance at the Harvard Square Theater described the young musician as 'the future of rock and roll'. Landau subsequently went on the become Springsteen's manager and producer and in 1975 helped release the epic album Born to Run with hit singles such as Born to Run and Thunder Road. After a break of a few years, Springsteen released his fourth album Darkness on the Edge of Town in 1978 which was regarded as one of Springsteen's best records.
By the late 1970s, Springsteen had esatblished himself as not only a talented musician but a talented songwriter who also began writing hit songs for other artists including Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Patti Smith and the Pointer Sisters. Springsteen also devoted himself to serveral humanitarian causes including joining the Musicians United for Safe Energy and Anti-Nuclear Power in September 1979. he went on to produce an album titled No Nukes and then a documentary with the same name which marked Springsteen's first association with political matters.
In 1980, Springsteen released another album, The River, which continued to focus on the life of working class people and resulted in a hit single 'Hungry Heart'. The album faired well commercially and was followed by a long local and international tour throughout Europe and major cities in the US. Springsteen's success in the 80s got him on the cover Rolling Stone Magazine but his subsequent album Nebraska in 1982 was in stark contrast to his previous rock and roll style with only solo accoustic songs. The material was reportedly written in a depressed state and expressed a harsh depiction of American life.
The 90s to 2000s
The early 90s marked big changes in Springsteen's life. In 1991, Springsteen won an Academy Award and multiple Grammy Awards for his famous song "Streets of Philadelphia" used in the soundtrack of the movie Philadelphia. The same year Springsteen married Scialfa and now has three children. In 1992, Springsteen released two albums simultaneously Human Touch and Lucky Town.
In 2000 Springsteen went on his famous Reunion Tour with the E Street Band with the finale of the tour sold out at New York City's Madison Square Garden. It also led to controversy over one of his songs "American Skin (41 Shots)", which was about the police shooting of Amadou Diallo. The final shows at Madison Square Garden were recorded and made into an HBO Concert, with corresponding DVD and album releases named Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band: Live in New York City.
In 2002, Springsteen released an album called The Rising which focused on the September 11 attacks. The album gained critical acclaim and was a commercial success and became Springsteen's best selling album in 15 years. Throughout 2000, Springsteen continued to tour across the US and Europe to promote his new album. While the singer had maintained a loyal fan base all over the world and particularly in Europe, his popularity in some parts of the US had faded. However, still in high demand along the US coast, Springsteen played for an extraordinary ten nights at the Giants Stadium in New Jersey, with an unprecedented number of tickets sold.
Springsteen's most recent work was in April 2006 when he released We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions. This was an American roots music project that focused on 15 songs made popular by the radical musical activism of Peter Seeger. The album was recorded with the help of a large ensemble of musicians, including Patti Scialfa, Soozie Tyrell, and The Miami Horns from past efforts. In contrast to previous albums, this one was recorded in just three one-day sessions. The final recordings even include Springsteen calling out key changes to the band as they make their way through the tracks.
