Basketball used to be considered a college sporting event after the Second World War. At the time there were just two professional leagues, situated in New York City. As the basketball gained popularity, many other sports big shots saw the possibilities of a major professional league. At last in 1946, the owners of the major ice hockey arenas in Midwestern United States and the Northeastern formed Basketball Association of America (BAA). The members included Boston Celtics, the Chicago Stags, Cleveland Rebels, New York Knickerbockers, Philadelphia Warriors, Pittsburgh Ironmen, Providence Steamrollers, St. Louis Bombers, Toronto Huskies and the Washington Capitals. These members were present at the first meeting of the association which was held at the Hotel Commodore in NY. After three years BBA merged with National Basketball League (NBL) and got the name National Basketball Association (NBA) - the name by which it is known since then. From time to time the NBA has taken part in international club competitions including the McDonald's Championship (1987 - 1999) in which its champion competed with the continental champions of FIBA. Every season, the NBA tickets sell out fast as it is a much awaited event of the year.
Composed of twenty-nine teams in the United States plus one in Canada, NBA is today, North America's most successful professional men's basketball league. The thirty teams are divided into two conferences; Eastern and Western. Teams are additionally divided into four divisions, namely, Atlantic Division, Central Division, Midwest Division and Pacific Division.
The regular season kicks off in the 1st week of November every year during which each team plays 41 home and forty one road games totaling 82 games. Each team plays two home, two away games against team in its own division and two more games with each team in the other conference.
Prior to the start of the regular season, a series of preseason exhibition games are played. These games show the finest players which are selected after rigorous training. The training camps are a month ago by all the teams. These camps are a way to evaluate the team players and identify strengths and weaknesses. Based on which, the players are trained for the regular season. Finally, the best players are selected to determine the 12-man active roster as well as the three-man inactive roll. The regular season is halted for a while in February to commemorate the NBA's annual All-Star Game. The best performing player is awarded a Game MVP award. There are many other contests including Rookie Challenge, the Skills Challenge, Three Point Contest, and the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. The regular season comes to an end during the last week of April. At that time individual awards are decided after voting. These awards include the Sixth Man of the Year Award, the Rookie of the Year Award, the Most Improved Player Award, t he Defensive Player of the Year Award, Coach of the Year Award and the Most Valuable Player Award. Voting is also conducted to select the honorary, post-season teams.
After this the NBA Playoffs begin in which teams in each conference play for the Championship. The finals are held in June every year and include a best of 7 series between the winners from each conference. The demand for NBA tickets especially for these games is the highest as the fans of the winning teams from each conference want to cheer for their favorite team. The winner of these NBA finals gets the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy whereas the championship ring is received by every player of the victor team. Moreover, the best performing player of the series is awarded the Bill Russell NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award.
So far, the team with the most championship wins is the Boston Celtics - with 17 wins (NBA Finals) - followed by the Los Angeles Lakers with fifteen overall championships. The Chicago Bulls come next with six championships all during the 1990s. San Antonio Spurs have won four championships.
