Characters of the ballet are introduced in a Christmas party hosted at Stahlbaum home. Clara and Fritz welcome their guests and wait for their beloved godfather Drosselmeyer. He presents Clara a handsome wooden Nutcracker that becomes the gift of the evening. The excited Clara plays with her nutcracker and later at night sleeps with it. At midnight, strange things begin to happen and all non living things around her come to life. She fights against an army of mice and then meets her prince charming.
