Born in the town of Cordell, Kentucky, Richard Lee Skaggs, more popularly known as Ricky Skaggs entered the music industry back in the 1960s. His interest for music developed at the mere age of six when he started playing the mandolin. During this time, Skaggs also started performing live with bluegrass legend, Bill Monroe who is often accredited for developing the genre. A year later, Skaggs was invited to become a part of the television show Martha White's Country Music Variety Show. Continuing to play on a local level, the artist became acquainted with teen prodigy, Keith Whitley, who was known to dominate the guitar. It was in the nineties that Ricky Skaggs decided to create his own band and produce music that was close to his heart. Embracing his bluegrass roots, the artist established the group, Kentucky Thunder in 1997. It comprised of members, Andy Leftwich playing the fiddle, Coby Kilby on lead guitar, Paul Brewster handling harmony vocals and rhythm guitar, Justin Moses on banjo, Mark Fain playing the bass and Ed Faris on baritone vocals and occasional rhythm guitar. Together Skaggs along with his band have released nine studio albums working with record labels such as Rounder Records and Skaggs Family Records. Out of the nine releases, three have been placed at number one on the US Top Bluegrass Albums Chart and two others have peaked at the second spot. Similarly all nine have been charted on Top Country Albums. These albums have garnered a whopping amount of seven prestigious Grammy Awards from the categories of "Best Bluegrass Album" and "Best Country Performance by a Group". Albums Bluegrass Rules!, Ancient Tones, Soldier of the Cross, A Simple Life, Brand New Strings, Instrumentals and Honoring the Fathers of Bluegrass bagged these awards.

As a soloist Ricky Skaggs has released thirty two studio albums, two live albums and a compilation album. These albums have spawned thirteen number one Hot Country Songs singles, five gold certifications and four platinum certifications. These albums have also brought in countless Grammy, Country Music Association, International Bluegrass Music Association, Billboard Magazine, Music City News and Country Music Television awards. Ricky Skaggs has also been voted amongst the top hundred guitarists of the century by Musician Magazine and the artist of the decade by BBC Radio 2's Listeners Poll.
