Deepak Chopra is a famous American physician, famous for his public speaking, his best selling books and alternative medicine, particularly Ayurveda. He is famous health and new age guru who is also one of the most notable names in American medicine. He has taught at such prestigious universities as the Harvard University, Tufts University and Boston University. Deepak Chopra is the founder of the American Association of Ayurvedic Medicine and the medical director of the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Center. He also founded, with David Simon, a neurologist, the Chopra Center for Wellbeing whose programs are recognized for medical credits by the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego and the American Medical Association. He has also started the Chopra Foundation, in 2009, for advancing mind and body spiritual healing through education, research and fundraising for projects.
To date, Chopra has written seventy books, of which a mind blowing twenty one are New York Times bestsellers. His books have sold more than twenty million copies all over the world and have been translated into thirty five different languages. He is the recipient of many awards for his work, including the Oceana Award, the Humanitarian Starlite Award, the Cinequest Life of a Maverick Award and the GOI Peace Award. He has been praised all over the media, by the likes of Time magazine.
He was born in New Delhi, India to a famous Indian cardiologist and lieutenant in the British Army. At a young age, he had aspired to be a journalist and an actor but when he read the novel Arrowsmith, written by Sinclair Lewis, he was inspired to become a doctor. He then went on to study at the St. Columbas School and then studied at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He moved to the US in 1968 where he interned and did his residency training at the Muhlenberg Hospital, located in Plainfield, New Jersey. He also worked at the Lahey Clinic and the University of Virginia Hospital.
In 1973, he earned his medicine license in Massachusetts and then received a California medicine license years later. He specialized in endocrinology and was certified in internal medicine, added to being a member of the American Medical Association. He then went on to teach at medical schools at universities such as Harvard University, Tufts University and Boston University. He also became the head of the New England Memorial Hospital, today known as the Boston Regional Medical Center. Following that, he started a private practice and then went on to study Ayurveda, at the invitation of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
Following that, he founded the American Association of Ayurvedic Medicine. In 1992, he served on the alternative medicine panel of the National Institutes of Health. A year later, he became the executive director of the Sharp Institute for Human Potential and Mind-Body, after receiving a thirty thousand dollar grant from the National Institutes of Health to study Ayurvedic medicine.
With neurologist David Simon, he founded the Chopra Center for Wellbeing and then revived an ancient meditation practice, the Primordial Sound Meditation, after travelling to India to study its history. In 2005, he became a senior scientist at The Gallup Organisation and then a professor at the Kellogg School of Management at the Northwestern University. He is also a columnist who writes for the San Francisco Chronicle, The Washington Post, The Huffington Post and The Times of India.
