He started his journey to fame with the release of his LP 'Something/Anything' in 1972 which went gold before he joined Utopia during the 70s and 80s. Rundgren started his career with 'Woody's Truck Shop' which is a Philadelphia based music group. He left the group to form his own band garage rock band Nazz in 1967 and released three albums titled 'Nazz', 'Nazz Nazz' and 'Nazz III'. The song 'Open My Eyes' from one of their albums was included in Nuggets in 1972 which helped the band gain recognition.
Rundgren was noted for his versatility and distinctive style. He is influenced by The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Cream. His early songwriting was highly influenced by Laura Nyro. He started learning audio production and engineering after he left Nazz in 1969. He soon signed with Alber Groosman and started working as a producer for other groups and released some of his own work through Ampex Records during that time. He was one of the first artists signed by Albert Grossman for his Bearsville Records. His production work made him one of the most popular music producers of the early 1970s.
Rundgren released his double LP 'Something/Anything' which marked the beginning of his solo career in 1972. He produced the entire LP himself including all songs, compositions, vocals and instruments. The song 'I Saw the Light' was included in the Top 20 U.S. hits along with 'Hello It's Me' which took position #5.
He changed his song writing style when he wrote the songs of his second album 'The Ballad of Todd Rundgren'. He eventually released three progressive rock albums based on his new style. He released 'A Wizard, a True Star' in 1973 with 'Todd' and 'Initiation' in 1974. 'Initiation' was a result of his work with Utopia a progressive and psychedelic rock band. He used a psychedelic Gibson SG which was previously used by Eric Clapton with Utopia. He bought the guitar from Jackie Lomax in 1972.
Rundgren released a concept album 'Healing' in 1981 and 'The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect' in 1982 which were his last releases through Bearsville Records. He was signed by Warner Bros. Records and through that label he released 'A Cappella' in 1985. The album made use of programmed vocal samples. His albums 'Nearly Human' and '2nd Wind' were recorded live. Each song was recorded as a separate track without any overdubbing. '2nd Wind' was his last album released through a major label.
He used his own label 'Todd Rundgren interactive' which he used to release 'No World Order' in 1993. The album was designed for Phillips CD-I but was released on PC and Macintosh as well. He released 'The Individualist' in 1995 which contained interactive video content. His work with Utopia was probably the best part of his career. He released his 1975 live album titled 'Another Live' with Utopia which showcased his work as a recording engineer. Utopia was originally a progressive rock band but adopted pop style for their 1977 album 'Opp! Wrong Planet'. Utopia's last album was titled 'P.O.V.' which includes 'Mated' which is now a regular song for Rundgren's solo tours.
Todd Rundgren has released a total of 21 studio albums, 2 live albums, 10 compilation albums, 2 video albums and 4 music videos. He was one of the best music producers of the 80s and was recognized as one of the most creative musicians of the world. Rundgren is simply phenomenal during live performances because he knows how to engineer sound better than most other artists. He will be able to entertain and mesmerize you with his creativity.
