The idea of forming The Head and the Heart came about as a result of a series of mic nights at a pub in Ballard, Seattle's Conor Byrne. Jonathon Russell and Josiah Johnson came across Kenny Hensley in Seattle and their mutual passion for music made them join hands and perform together. Later, the rest of the band members met Charity Rose Thielen, Chris Zasche and Tyler Williams. The Head and the Heart was on its way.
The band recorded their first album titled, "The Head and the Heart" not too long afterwards and began to distribute its copies at their shows just a few weeks after their formation. Their talents began to turn heads and that landed them a recording contract in the year 2010. That was the kind of break they had been looking for. The band tweaked their self titled album a little. Although it included the same tracks, the single, Sounds Like Hallelujah was recorded again and an expanded version of Rivers and Roads was also released. The album was then re-released in the form of a CD in 2011 and immediately gained a lot of popularity.
The Head and the Heart toured extensively throughout 2010 and 2011 and enthralled their fans not only in the United States but also in Europe. They even opened for famous bands like The Walkmen, Dr. Dog, Dave Matthews, The Low Anthem, Death Cab for Cutie, My Morning Jacket, Iron & Wine as well as The Decemberists. The Head and the Heart also headlined their own shows. In 2011, they were hailed by Seattle's City Arts Magazine as "Seattle's Best New Band."They also made their television debut in 2011 on "Conan."
The Head and the Heart released their sophomore album, "Let's Be Still" in October 2013. Recorded and produced with the talented Shawn Simmons in Seattle, the first single from it, Shake, came out in 2013 and quickly became a fan-favorite. The album also included tracks like, Josh McBride, My Friends, 10,000 Weight in Gold, These Days are Numbered, Homecoming Heroes, Let's Be Still and Fire/Fear. Let's Be Still peaked on the first spot on the Billboard's "US Folk Albums'' charts and the "US Independent Albums" charts. Not only this, the band also scored the fifth spot on the "Digital Albums" chart.
Many of the band's singles have even been featured in hit television programs. Rivers and Roads was used in the famous American television program, "Chuck." The same track was also played in the show, "How I Met Your Mother." Not only this, another single by the band, Down in the Valley was used in programs like the "Beaver Falls" as well as "Sons of Anarchy." The single, Lost in My Mind was featured in the show "Hart of Dixie."
