Both Anthrax & Testament came into being in the early 1980s and quickly reached the top positions in thrash metal. Inspired by Metallica, they soon created their own loyal fan following due to their great music and invigorating live performances.
Anthrax was formed earlier than Testament in 1981 in New York City. They were named Anthrax because it was a fatal disease and sounded evil enough for a metal band! The founding members were the guitarist duo Danny Lilker and Scot Ian but the lineup went under constant change. Vocalist Neil Turbin joined in 1982 and after that the lineup was steady for 2 years. With Charlie Benante on drums, the debut album Fistful of Metal was released in 1984. With some great music and a US tour, Anthrax became steadily popular among the thrash metal fans.
Vocalist Joey Belladonna joined the lineup in 1985 and the next album Spreading the Disease was released in the same year. In 1987, the band experimented with humorous lyrics in their album Among the Living. Anthrax started singing about comic book heroes, movies and Stephen King novels. With classic songs like Indians and Caught in a Mosh, the band became legendary. Then came a turn back to darker sounds with the State of Euphoria in 1988 and Persistence of Time in 1990 and the band enticed back the serious hard metal fans. The cover song Got the Time was simply superb with great guitar playing. With John Bush introduced as the new vocalist in the 1990s, the band released Sound of White Noise in 1993, Stomp 442 in 1995, Volume 8: The Threat is Real in 1998 and We've Come for You All in 2003. The band was hindered by controversies, lineup changes and legal battles for album rights but it still managed to stay adrift. 2007-2009 saw Dan Nelson as vocalist of the band and then in finally towards the end of 2009, the fans of John Bush were elated with joy as he came back in Anthrax for a year and did amazing tours. Then Belladonna returned and the new album Worship Music was released on 13th September with raving reviews.
Testament is another great hard metal band founded in 1983 in Berkeley, California by guitarist Eric Peterson and vocalist Derrick Ramirez. Their first album the Legacy, was released in 1987. The album received positive reviews by hardcore thrash metal fans. In fact, Anthrax & Testament jointly came on the road for a successful tour of America and Europe at this time. 1988 saw the release of Testament's next album, The New Order. Some successful touring took place for this album after which the band sat together to record some serious politics inspired music in their album Practice what You Preach that was released in 1989. The album gained instant popularity, which was followed by a slow-sales album Souls of Black in 1990. Testament tried again to regain its popularity by releasing traditional heavy metal album The Ritual but again faced slow sales.
Testament, then, seriously paid attention to its lineup and worked on diversity and released Low in 1994. 1997 saw the release of their album Demonic with more focus on death metal. 1998 saw another album release in the form of The Gathering with some signs of black metal influenzes in it. Unfortunately, two of the band members got cancer and the band arranged events to raise money for their treatment. Eventually, both the members recovered successfully. With reunions happening, the band released The Formation of Damnation in 2008. With successful tours happening throughout, the band continued to go up in their popularity scale. The band is currently working on their album called The Dark Roots of Earth, which they will support on the Anthrax & Testament tour.
