The Apollo Theatre Spring Gala holds a special significance as well because of the venue where it is being held. The Apollo Theatre is an amazing historical venue that was built in 1913. Situated in Harlem, New York the theater has seen some of the greatest performers in history grace its stage and mesmerize audiences. The Amateur Nights at the theater are a part of the folklore and the magical experience that made Apollo so famous. Especially before the World War II era these nights became synonymous with amazing musical performances. These acts launched the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle and more recently Machine Gun Kelly and Mariah Carey etc to stardom. These Amateur Nights still form a part of the Apollo calendar and are one of the most integral parts of this stunning venue amongst all the events that are held there.
This year's gala will induct the legendary Lionel Richie and the late great Elta James into the Apollo Hall of Fame to honor the contribution of the two icons. On top of that the event will be headlined by none other than the sensational Chaka Khan who will perform as a tribute to her late friend Whitney Houston. Chaka Khan's performance will be one of the biggest highlights of this year's Apollo Theatre Spring Gala. Chaka came stepped into the world of music with her own band Rufus in the early 1970's when the group released their self-titled debut album. They made their mark with the song Tell Me Something Good which was collaborated on by none other than Stevie Wonder himself. The track turned into a rage as soon as it came out and brought the band a Grammy for its efforts. Their next album Rags to Rufus sold well over one million copies to go Platinum. After a string of multi-platinum albums in the 1970's Chaka embarked on a solo career with her debut album titled Chaka. With the release of the track I Feel for You in 1984, Khan's career as a solo performer took off. The track became an instant hit that topped charts in the US and UK to sell more than a million copies. Her album Life is a Dance-The Remix Project came and captured charts to cement her Chaka's reputation as a wonderful artist. Chaka Khan then teamed up with Ray Charles on the song I'll Be Good to You and that effort earned the duo a Grammy. Her next album The Woman I Am came and went gold. Chaka has won a staggering ten Grammy awards to rank amongst an elite group of legendary performers. She will make sure Apollo Theatre Spring Gala is one extraordinary event.
