Slayer is an acclaimed thrash metal band that was created in California in 1981 by Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman. By 1986, with the release of the album, Reign in Blood, the group achieved commercial success and rose to great prominence. Today Slayer is known as one of the "Big Four" thrash metal acts alongside Anthrax, Megadeth and Metallica. It was reported in 2004 that the band had sold more than 3.5 million albums in the US alone.
Conversely, Suicidal Tendencies is more of a crossover thrash band. The band was created in 1981 in Los Angeles by Mike Muir, who is the only constant member of the group's lineup.
So far, they have released nine studio recorded albums, six compilations (out of which one is a "double EP" and another is a re-recording of their first album), four split albums comprising the unique Welcome to Venice, and two full length videos.
Slayer's musical style combines elements of double bass drumming with fast guitar riffs and fuses them with rough scaled and screaming vocals. King and Tom Araya from the original lineup of the group greatly contributed to the lyrical content of the band. The music arrangement was handled by Hanneman and King with the help of Dave Lombardo (drummer of the band).
One of the most intriguing aspects of Slayer's work has always been their innovative album art work, which covers diverse themes such as religion, warfare, Satanism, anti-religion elements, insanity as well as serial killings.
Slayer's music has been quite influential and has been cited by many other bands as a musical, visual as well as lyrical influence on their respective styles.
Suicidal Tendencies' self-titled debut album came out in 1983 and the band rose to a lot of prominence in the music industry. Their first album spawned the hit single, "Institutionalized," which received immense acclaim. It was also amongst the first crossover metal songs to have a video that got considerable air time on MTV.
Their follow up releases comprised various popular songs. One single that was widely appreciated was "Look Up (The Boys Are Back)". Their second album was called Join the Army followed by the release of How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today. Two more albums were released afterwards, namely Controlled by Hatred/Feel Like Shit.Déjà vu and Lights.Camera.Revolution! Both these albums were very successful and were certified Gold by the RIAA.
