Hailing from Queens, New York, Salt N Pepa comprises of Cheryl "Salt" Wray, Deidra "Dee Dee" Roper and Sandra "Pepa" Denton. Breaking in to the Hip Hop music scene back in 1985, the trio has sold more than 15 million albums all over the globe, which is why they're also sometimes cited as the Best Selling Female Rap Group. The group has released 5 studio albums so far, and all of them were nothing less than a commercial success. Attaining either Gold or Platinum status in America only, all the albums did pretty well in giving them the kind of exposure and fan following that any Hip Hop group would ask for.
Although their first album, as Salt N Pepa, came out in 1986, but a year earlier the group released their first single entitled 'The Showstopper' as Supernature. After their first single being a mild success, the group changed its name to the present one, and came out with their debut album titled "Hot, Cool & Vicious". The album was produced by Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor and was released by Next Plateau Records. Although now it has officially received platinum status in America, but initially the album wasn't as success as some of the future albums would be later in their career. The album featured hit singles like "Chick on the Side", "My Mic Sound Nice", and "Tramp". However the group really outdid itself with their first major hit "Push it". Album also garnered them with their first ever Grammy Award Nomination for their hit single "Push It".
"Push it" paved a way for their second studio album, "A Salt with a Deadly Pepa", which also contained one of their Grammy Nominated hit singles, "Shake your Thang". The two other singles for the same album, "Everybody Get Up" and "Twist & Shout", also received substantial airplay on several UK based radio stations. "Twist & Shout" went on to become a prominent track among the UK audience, and garnered positive reviews overall.
The album that followed "A Salt with a Deadly Pepa" was "Blacks' Magic" that came out back in the March of 1990. Almost all tracks on that album were produced by the members of the group themselves, as Azor, who produced all of their previous albums, didn't show up during their recording sessions. The group maintained their tradition of giving out hit singles on each of their album, as Blacks' Magic featured hit singles like "Expression", "I Don't Know", "Let's Talk about Sex" and "Do You Want Me". Out of all of the six singles that were released on that album, Expression totally stood out as it captured the #1 spot on R&B for the total of 8 weeks. After having sold 1.5 Million units of the album, the trio released a greatest hits album titled "A Blitz of Salt N Pepa Hits" later on.
Salt N Pepa hit the recording studio once again to record their fourth studio album entitled "Very Necessary" that would later come out to be the best album that group has released in their entire career. Released in 1993 on London Records/Polygram, the album bore hit singles like Shoop, Whatta Man, and None of Your Business. After selling well over 7 Million Copies of the album worldwide, "Very Necessary" made Salt N Pepa first female Rap group ever, to score an album which acquired Multi Platinum status. They also claimed their first ever Grammy Award win, for their hit rap act, "None of Your Business" and so making another record of being the first Female Hip Hop group ever that also won a Grammy award.
Before the group disbanded officially in 2002, they released their fifth and last album as a Group that was released by Red Ant Entertainment. Without having any major promotional campaign being run for the album, Salt N Pepa still managed to give our some hit singles out of that album too. Following the release of the album, the group embarked on promotional tour after which the group broke up.
After almost 5 years break from the music industry, the Group reunited back in 2007 and performed at the BET Hip Hop awards along with Yo-Yo, Lady of Rage and MC Lyte.
After several years of gap, Salt N Pepa reunites again to embark on a live concert tour in which they'll hit various venues nationwide. Don't miss out on a chance to see them perform live once again, so get your Salt N Pepa tickets, as soon as possible.
