The State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia is one of the oldest symphonic ensembles of the country. The debut performance of the State Orchestra took place more than seventy five years ago at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. During that time, the orchestra performed under the directors E. Kleiber and A. Gauk. Ever since its inception, it has been led by great musicians like Alexander Gauk, Natan Rakhlin, Konstantin Ivanov and Evgeny Svetlanov.
Svetlanov served the orchestra as a music director for the longest time and is known as "the last romantic of the 20th century." Under his leadership, the orchestra became one of the bests in the world and its repertoire grew. Today, it includes almost all of the Russian symphonic music, contemporary composers' work and several Western classics. For the first time, the orchestra toured abroad in 1956, and since then has been regularly representing Russian culture in Belgium, Australia, Canada, Austria, China, Denmark, the Czech Republic, France, Hong Kong, Germany, Italy, Lebanon, the U.S, Japan and Mexico. The discography of the orchestra includes hundreds of vinyl CDs and records released by foreign and leading Russian labels like Melodiya, EMI Classics, Bomba-Piter, Deutsche Grammophon, BMG, Naxos, and Chandos.
The State Orchestra has also participated in many festivals during the last three seasons of touring. These festivals include, The Arts Plaza, Crescendo and the III International Denis Matsuev Festival. The latest concert tours of the orchestra went to Spain, Germany and Russia. The current conductor of the orchestra is Vladimir Jurowski, who was appointed in 2011. In the past, renowned figures have graced the orchestra's podium as guest conductors, which include names like H. Abendroth, V. Gergiev, A. Cluytens, Erich Kleiber, N. Golovanov, Kurt Masur, E. Mravinsky, M. Rostropovich, Charles Munch, and S. Samosud. Besides these great musicians, some of the outstanding soloists have also performed with the orchestra, some of them being Yu. Bashmet, M. Caballe, A Fischer, Emil Gilels, O. Kagan, V. Krainev, Yehudi Menuhin, Sviatoslav Richter, E. Virsaladze and V. Tretyakov. This ensemble of talented musicians devotes a lot of time to touring across Russia. These musicians not just play at major venues, but also host charitable activities, which include free performances at schools, orphanages and hospitals of the country.
