Cinderella is a classic fairy tale which has been passed down from generations. Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella was a musical which was initially written for television. Richard Rodgers provided the music, while Oscar Hammerstein II came up with the lyrics and the book for the musical. Having seen numerous television remakes, Cinderella was eventually adapted for a stage production in 1958. Cinderella's London West End production and the New York City Opera production, are two of the most famous productions.
Douglas Carter Beane came up with a book based on Cinderella, for the musical's first Broadway production. The book differs from the original story, incorporating a political aspect in it. Yet, it manages to keep intact the magic and the romance, which made the original story so popular. Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, which began premiering on Broadway in March 2013, has earned many nominations. Ella's stepmother who is referred to as Madame, is an extremely self-centered and tyrannical person. Madame forces Ella to do all the chores in the house and treats her like a servant. In the kingdom, Prince Topher who is soon going to be crowned king, is trying to find his purpose in life. A royal ball is organized, to find Prince Topher a suitable wife. At the same time the story brings the social divide, between the rich and the poor, into focus through the character of Jean-Michel. Jean-Michel is a political radical who shares his ideas regarding the problems between, the have and the have-nots. While the society's upper class is excited by the upcoming royal ball, Jean-Michel is trying to motivate the poor to try and do something to alleviate their condition.
Madame leaves with her two daughters for the ball and Ella is left behind. In a magical twist, Ella is helped by her Fairy Godmother to get ready for the ball. Ella arrives at the ball and makes an impression on Prince Topher. The Prince and Ella interact and she opens his eyes to the conditions of the poor. However, Ella has to leave just before they are about to share a kiss. The prince, who is smitten by Ella has no clue to her identity. In her hurried exit, Ella has left behind a glass slipper which is the only thing the Prince has got in order to find Ella. Watch the musical and find out if the prince will ever find Ella and, the alternate romance that is evolving between two unlikely characters.
