Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger first formed an association as the members of the band named 'The Doors' in the year 1965. Based in Los Angeles, the band also included Jim Morrison (vocalist) and John Densmore (drummer). Ray Manzarek played the keyboard and Robby Krieger was the band's guitarist. The band became popular for their rock music and wild lyrics. Morrison died in 1971 but the band continued to play as a trio until 1973 when it broke up.
Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger rejoined hands in 2002 to give a new lease of life to the band. They initially called themselves The Doors of the 21st Century. They then changed the name to 'D21C' and later to 'Riders on the Storm'. However due to legal issues, they finalized their name to be Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger of the Doors. They have been supported by a number of musicians from time to time. These include Ian Astbury from the Cult band, as the vocalist and Angelo Barbera from a band previously formed by Krieger, as the bassist. The current members of the band include Ty Dennis as the drummer, Phil Chen on bass and Dave Brock as the lead vocalist.
Though The Doors' career came to an end in the early 1970s, their popularity has given no sign of reducing The figures given by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) relate that The Doors sold more than 35 million albums in the United States of America and almost 100 million albums around the world. Moreover three albums of The Doors were included in The 500 Greatest Albums of All Times assembled by the Rolling Stone Magazine. The Doors and Strange Days both released in 1967, hold the 42nd and 407th respectively and L.A. Woman released in 1971 hold the 362nd position on the list. The band was also made part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 and they were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame (Rock category) in 2002 and the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007.
Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger are considered legends in their genre. Krieger holds the ninety-first position on the Rolling Stone list of top 100 guitarists of all times. Manzarek holds the fourth position on Digital Dreamdoor's list of 100 Greatest Rock Keyboardist of All Time.
