Lorraine Gordon is one of the recipients of NEA Jazz Master Fellowship award this year which is the highest honor that is given to legendary jazz artists for their exceptional contributions towards the advancement of jazz.
Gordon's association to jazz music began from Village Vanguard. It is a club in New York City that has been a host to jazz musicians like a religious arena. There's hardly a jazz artist who has not performed at Vanguard. Nat Hentoff once termed the club as, "The closest we have to the Camelot of jazz rooms".
A jazz heaven for more than seven decades now, Village Vanguard was established in 1935, with an aim of being a performing club. In the beginning it was a small triangular, basement room and usually had traditional and folk poetry gatherings. In 1957, Sonny Rollins recorded his first album at the club and soon after that Village Vanguard became home to live jazz recordings, with its intimate space and exceptional acoustics facilities.
Lorraine Gordon had been in possession of this club since 1989, after her husband Max Gordon passed away. Since then, she had made sure to keep it fit for recordings and live performances of jazz musicians. In her 2006 memoire, Alive at the Village Vanguard: My Life In and Out of Jazz Time, Lorraine writes, "What I'm saying is, I didn't arrive at the Village Vanguard from out of the blue. I stuck to what I loved. That was my art. I'm not a musician; I'm not a singer; I'm not a painter; I'm not an actress. I'm none of those things. But throughout my life I followed the course of the music that I loved." This incredible collaborator of jazz is being honored now, and it is a splendid chance to witness some of the best works in jazz music. A musical tribute comprising 16-piece Vanguard jazz orchestra is being prepared to honor the life and times of this legendary lady. The vanguard jazz orchestra that will be performing was founded in 1966 by Thad Jones and Mel Lewis. The legendary orchestra is internationally acclaimed for its wide-ranged repertoire that involves jazz music ranging from smooth swing 1970's jazz-funk style to avant-garde tunes and modern day jazz rhythms.
Several other artists will also be appearing on the event to pay their mark of respect to Lorraine Gordon. These include Barry Haris, Christian McBride, Anat Cohen Quartet and Rhoda Scott. Anat Cohen Quartet will also be performing, which is led by the Israeli born, New York based saxophonist and clarinetist. Washington Post has entitled Anat with "one of the brightest, most original young instrumentalist in jazz". The main feature of Cohen's performance is that she takes distinctive sound and melds different melodies with great ease and fluidity.
In addition to this, there will also be a performance by Barry Harris, another NEA Jazz Master, and American bepop pianist, who also happens to be one of Gordon's colleagues. Moreover, Slide Hampton- the two time Grammy Award winning composer- will also write a special arrangement of a James moody composition to honor the James Moody Democracy of Jazz Festival.
