Two professional teams playing in the North American Soccer League will be coming together this season in a face off that many are thrilled about. Minnesota United FC is all set to face Ottawa Fury FC at the National Sports Center in Minneapolis. The venue is the home field of Minnesota United, which means that while they will be playing to a home advantage in the middle of a familiar crowd, Ottawa Fury will have to face a hostile crowd and play to the away disadvantage.
Minnesota United FC played its inaugural game in 2010. The team, often called "The Loons," saw a meteoric rise in their club standings when they became champions of the 2011 North American Soccer League (NASL). The NASL was named after the original NASL that was disbanded in 1984. 2009 saw the modern day NASL emerge as a Division II soccer league that currently houses ten teams. It operates on a Split-season format which means that there are two seasons of championships each year; the Spring and the Fall edition. The Spring Season of NASL in 2014 was big for Minnesota United as it won the championship. As the Fall Season comes closer, United is determined to retain its standing as it goes into the season as the defending champ.
In the short span of the past four years, Minnesota United FC has faced various problems. Struggling to get an owner, going through numerous brand changes and facing trouble on the field; the journey of "The Loons," previously also called "The Stars," is a rocky, yet highly successful journey. Today, they stand as the number one team in the North American Soccer League and their roster includes some of the best international soccer players. The line-up of the team lists Mitch Hildebrandt of the U.S., Pablo Campos and Tiago Calvano of Brazil, Omar Daley from Jamaica, Simone Bracalello from Italy and Richard Garcia of Australia among others. As they prep for the upcoming fall season, the team is confident that it will succeed in defending its title.
On the other end, Ottawa Fury is ready to go head to head with the defending champs in the upcoming season. Fury was founded as a soccer club in 2011 and the Canadian team played its inaugural season in 2014. The Spring Championship put the team among the top ten, at rank six. They managed to score a total of nine goals which led them to win two home games and one away game. The roster of the club was hailed as one of the most promising line-ups of talent that included Tony Donatelli, who was responsible for scoring four of the nine goals, the Irish midfielder Richie Ryan, who serves as the Captain of the team, the Palestinian footballer, Omar Jarun, who serves as the Vice-Captain and Vini Dantas from Brazil among others. The Fury is hoping to improve their ranking as they get ready for the Fall Championship and seem undeterred by the fact that they will be playing the reigning champs.
